Camby In 3-Way Trade Back To New York?

Postby Clueminati017 on Tue Jan 06, 2009 11:14 am

Donnie Walsh denied that he is working on a three-way deal with the Blazers and Clippers, but several team sources confirmed that Walsh and the Knicks' coaching staff have discussed the possibility of adding Marcus Camby, who was traded from Denver to the Clippers last July.

Portland has been trying for months to acquire David Lee, who will become a restricted free agent this summer. Mike D'Antoni would prefer to have Camby as his center as opposed to the shorter Lee, who has improved offensively but has struggled on the defensive end.

There was a report of the Knicks being involved in a deal that would send Quentin Richardson to the Clippers and Lee to Portland, with the Knicks getting back Camby and former Knicks first-round pick Channing Frye. Walsh, however, denied having discussed that trade with the Clippers and Blazers.

This is only Pt. 2 of the Blazers wanting David Lee.

Getting Frye and Camby wouldn't be so bad in the short term and with Camby's contract expiring in 2010 it ties in with their current plans for the free agent market that summer, however if they trade Richardson that leaves them without a starting shooting guard and no obvious replacement with Jamal Crawford and Mardy Collins dealt last month.

Im still not too sure why the Blazers want David Lee. His quality is undoubted but the Blazers have a pretty stacked frontcourt and I guess that Lee does not want to be the backup PF for LaMarcus Aldrige for the next years as Aldridge is still developing and will only get better.

Maybe its because Greg Oden is still underachieving but playing Aldridge at C and Lee at PF is imho not good enough to keep up with the likes of Bynum/Gasol, Yao/Scola or Duncan/whoever.
Still I like Lee's quality to grab boards and score in the post and on the run.

They could probably get away with playing Lee at small forward but as noted in the other thread they've got Batum and Outlaw, not to mention Webster currently on the shelf, so it's a pretty stacked frontcourt when it comes to young talent worthy of playing significant minutes. Of course, the Blazers could have a tough time keeping some of those players and Lee could potentially end up replacing someone in the rotation in a situation where he can still get quality minutes. Making these rumoured deals work will probably require a couple of other players being thrown in anyway.

Yeah, but they don't have Elgin Baylor in the GM seat to push the button now. It's just Mike Dunleavy pushing the button.

Yes Zan, but the Nuggets wanted some cap space and they have Nene at C so they traded the "old" Camby, who's a monster rebounder machine in LA
