Cavs trying to get #1 and #2 picks

Already owners of the No. 1 pick in the draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers are trying to sweeten their position by securing the second pick as well, according to league sources.

The Cavaliers are in discussions with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons about a three-team trade that would give Cleveland the top two picks of next month's NBA draft.

The Cavaliers would use the picks to select Duke point guard Kyrie Irving and Arizona forward Derrick Williams, the sources said.

In the trade being discussed, Cleveland would absorb Detroit's Richard Hamilton into the $14.6 million trade exception it received in last summer's LeBron James sign-and-trade with Miami, while also receiving the Pistons' No. 8 pick. The Cavaliers would then send that pick, along with their fourth pick, to Minnesota for the Timberwolves' second pick.

Cleveland would then buy Hamilton out of the $25 million remaining in the last two years on his contract, leaving the veteran shooting guard free to sign with another club as a free agent. Chicago would be one of the likeliest destinations.

Has this ever happened before? A team getting the #1 and #2 picks in a draft?

This happens to me many times while playing NBA 2k. One time I actually have the top 4 picks and my team became dominant after two years. Hopefully if they can pull this off same thing will happen like in my association.

That would be a great move for the cavs. Though I don't know if I would get that trade if I was Kahn, as either of the two top prospects can be a huge boost and maybe one of the really few future stars on a weak draft class.

On the other hand that would be a nice move for Chicago, getting rip as a free agent. He would be a nice fit.

Basically Minny doesn't get the 2nd, but gets the 4th AND 8th? Pretty good deal, for them, because if Kyrie was picked first, Derrick Williams plays the same position as Beas and Love. The pick would be wasted, so getting two other lottery picks (4 and 8) seems like a pretty good deal.

Great deal all around. Cleveland would be pretty good with Irving and Williams. They'd have to find a way to trade Baron, though.

Minnesota has to get a guard in the draft for sure. If not risk it with irving, with the possibility of losing him , then who are the remaining solid top 10 guards?

Choosing knight and walker could be a wiser option I guess....

Brandon Knight, Kemba Walker, possibly Jimmer, (Clay Thompson, Alec Burks?)

I think they should stand pat at 4 and use their trade exception for something else. Unless of course they think Kanter is a stud & need both him & Irving. Otherwise they'll get a solid player at 4.

I knew it, i knew it, I knew it. I knew cleveland would try to make a trade for Hamilton, i just heard this on espn a few moments ago. That would be great for cleveland. Cleveland's front office knows what they're doing.

That would be awesome for the cavs to have the top two picks in this draft, i don't know if its a strong draft or not though. These are exciting times for us cavalier fans since Lebron was drafted way back when.

But the rumors say the Cavs wouldn't keep Rip they'd just buyout his contract and then Rip would sign with the Bulls.

It would be fitting for the Cavs to get their "retribution" in such a weak draft. They are a pitiful excuse for a franchise.

Seriously. I think it would be in their best interest to trade everyone possible for draft picks. Especially JJ Hickson. They could definitely use the 1 and 2. They could try trading off Flopejao for a pick as well.

You know, just to completely start over. The Pistons get wrecked in this trade; the Cavs could easily offload Hickson or someone to Detroit to sweeten the deal a little.

Then the Cavs have no reason to make this deal, unloading Hickson doesn't make any sense (one of the very few young promising players Cavs have and you suggest starting the rebuild by moving him?).

They should trade jamison for a first round pick as well.

Easier said than done. Despite being an expiring, I seriously doubt anyone would trade him for just a TPE, draft pick would be too much to ask. The only way I see him netting a draft pick would be if it's attatched to a worse contract (see Davis-Williams trade).

It hasn't, though teams have picked at one and three before.

Cavs have nothing to lose here, great deal for them if they can make it happen. Pretty good for the Pistons and Timberwolves too; Detroit sheds Hamilton's contract and a player that Kuester has alienated, the Timberwolves keep a pick in the top five and pick up the eighth pick as well. Everyone benefits though no one more than the Cavs, so I could certainly see the Pistons or Timberwolves backing out before the discussion gets serious.

Please dont sign Rip....hes plain awful and overrated nowadays..

I disagree. The Pistons are currently paying him like an All-Star and that's certainly expecting too much and overpaying him at this point in his career. However, I'd say he's still capable of being a solid scorer at shooting guard off the bench and for the money the Bulls would likely give him - which wouldn't be anywhere near what Detroit are paying him at the moment - they could use him. I'm not suggesting he's the best option for the Bulls to improve offensively, but he strikes me as a viable one all the same.

He's definitely an upgrade over Bogans.

Re: Cavs trying to get #1 and #2 picks

I could see Thibodeau still opting for Bogans as a starter over Hamilton.

But I'm with Andrew. I think he fills a need, maybe not a title-clinching move, but he can bring them a half-step closer.
