Byron Scott to Become Head Coach of Cavaliers

Thu Jul 01, 2010 7:02 pm

The Cavaliers are currently negotiating a contract with Byron Scott, according to a report from ESPN.

Broussard reports that Scott will be Cleveland's next head coach.

Earlier on Wednesday, Brian Windhorst of the Plain-Dealer reported that Brian Shaw was beginning to assemble a coaching staff and would be bringing the Triangle offense to Cleveland if a deal was reached.

Windhorst confirms Broussard's report of the Cavaliers moving forward with Scott.

Brian Shaw's agent has told FanHouse that he withdrew his name from consideration.

Apparently he's accepted the job.

Damn, I'd love to see Shaw bring the triangle offense to Cleveland. Imagine how fun that would be.

Anyway, I'm not sure if the signing of Scott could persuade LeBron to stay in Cleveland and I'm still not sure what Scott could bring to the team. I know absolutely nothing about his system and the way he coach so I have no right to say anything on this. ;)

Byron Scott is the coach who made the Nets relevant and then went on to make something out of a New Orleans Hornets team that had absolutely nothing to work with (besides Chris Paul). He's a good pickup and a definite upgrade over Mike Brown, whose judgment I've always found questionable in games.

It seems like he thinks Lebron will stay in Cleveland. I don't see why he would want to coach the cavs without Lebron.

Perhaps, but then maybe he's just keen to coach again and with other vacancies already filled, is willing to take his chances.

Agreed--a coaching job is a coaching job, and it doesn't look like too many other teams are dialing Byron Scott's number at the moment. On the other hand, bringing in a more competent coach may have some influence on Lebron James' decision to re-sign with Cleveland. For all that has been said about NBA free agency, it's become somewhat discarded over the last few days that Lebron James leaving the Cavaliers isn't exactly a certainty just yet. I would realistically still put the Cavaliers as the front-runner in the hunt for Lebron right now.

True, but then LeBron's apparent disinterest in getting involved in the hunt for a new coach is noteworthy too. With his experience and past success, I could see Scott being a coach that reinforces LeBron's desire to stay or gives him reason to reconsider the Cavs if he has decided to sign elsewhere, but then again his mind might be well and truly made up at this point. I think it's a good hiring regardless, though should LeBron leave then I'd say Scott will quickly find himself the scapegoat in a dismal post-LeBron era.
