NBA approves new rule

NBA approves new rule for too many men violation

NBA owners have approved a rules change regarding violations for too many men on the court, closing a loophole that allowed Portland to score on a 6-on-5 situation earlier this season.

If a team is given a technical foul for having too many players, the non-offending team can choose to accept or nullify the action that took place before the whistle blew. If the team playing with five scores, it can keep the points.

Should that team nullify the play, the game clock reverts to the time before the ball was put in play with too many players on the floor.

Good decision, though it's surprising a rule like that wasn't in place before now. We lob our fair share of criticism at the NBA, but it is good that they're cleaning up things like this. Their recently reported plans on the travelling rules are another story.

this change is good, its nice to see that they got on it and fixed it mid-season without too much red tape it seems

Hard to see any complaints on this rule... unless they forget which team to ask about the infraction...

I remember in the AFL an umpire asked the offending player (for a different rule) if he wanted to count the goal he just kicked, or take it again. No surprise which one he chose...

Convincing rule finally. Sorta mulligan optioon to other team, which is nice. Now only if they can do something about crab dribble...

Well, they are. Just not what most of us were expecting them to do about it. ;)
