Cuttino Mobley to retire?

Sat Dec 06, 2008 9:28 am

Apparently he's set to visit a heart specialist to determine whether his condition will allow him to continue his NBA career.

Knick guard Cuttino Mobley has met with a heart specialist in Minneapolis - the same one which teammate Eddy Curry refused to visit during his dispute with the Chicago Bulls which resulted in the sign and trade to New York, the New York Post is reporting.

One source said Mobley has mulled taking a medical retirement, depending on the results of the series of heart tests. However because this was a preexisting condition it is unclear if he has the standard insurance stipulations in his contract.

"It's a tough call," the source said. "I'm pretty sure (he) doesn't want to take chances if it's really that serious. It's a tough situation. The most important thing is him and his health."

Whether or not he can continue to play, hopefully he'll be alright and we won't see another untimely passing as we did with Pete Maravich, Reggie Lewis and Kevin Duckworth (to name a few). Considering he's had the condition since he came into the league, perhaps it won't turn out to be as serious as currently feared.

I have never heard of this before. I didn't ever know he had a heart condition. I think it's just another thing the Knicks are doing to free cap space. He's been able to play his whole career with it, why a problem now?

I'd say it has to do with liability reasons, much the same way that Raptors won't let Aussie rookie Nathan Jawai play....if you're an organisation who knowingly plays somebody with a serious health defect & they fall over & die on the court, then it could spell big law suits....I'd imagine that would be why....as to why it's a problem with Knicks & not Clippers or Rockets, perhaps the heart defect is more pronounced than it previously was, perhaps different doctors see the same defect as either common or serious, or it might just be different organisational policies regarding player's health....I dunno....given the Knicks do need a SG at the moment, I'm sure they would prefer him to play rather than not....especially considering insurance probably wouldn't cover his contract because it's a pre-existing condition....

That would be my guess as well, that's it's more of a concern now than it used to be a few years ago or there are differing opinions on his condition.

Hopefully not serious enough to be a concern in day-to-day life but obviously serious enough to force him to retire. A bit of a blow for the Knicks right now but long term they'll get the cap relief so I'm not surprised that they went through with the trade despite the concerns about Mobley's health. As I said, hopefully those concerns are only about his ability to play professional basketball and not live a long, healthy life.
