Kings Sign Marco Belinelli for 3-years, $19 million

ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne reported just minutes ago that the Sacramento Kings have signed San Antonio Spurs free agent swingman Marco Belinelli to a three-year, $19 million contract.

Much like the drafting of Willie Cauley-Stein, and the shocking salary dump with Philadelphia, the Belinelli signing came out of nowhere, and yet in hindsight makes all of the sense in the world. After the Spurs resigned Danny Green, we should have connected a few more dots about Bellineli’s Spurs exit and the Kings need for veteran shooting.

With that being said, It’s nice to see Vlade Divac make his moves behind the scenes. As we all know, the more media, agents, and leaking involved, the less likely anything happens.

Marco Belinelli played 22.4 minutes per game with the Spurs last season, averaging 9.2 points, 1.5 assists, and 2.5 rebounds, shooting .374 from three, and .423 from the field. Admittedly, his 2013-14 season with the Spurs was considerably more efficient, but Bellineli is as proven a deep shooter as the Kings are going to find.

He also brings his championship experience with the Spurs to Sacramento, and I don’t need to tell you how important having someone with that sort of pedigree is for this team. The Kings don’t know what it takes to win. Marco does.

The Kings still have plenty of cap room to play with this summer, but acquiring Marco Belinelli at this very reasonable price is a good start.
