Andrew Wiggins To Be Named NBA Rookie Of The Year

Andrew Wiggins will be named the NBA's 14-15 Rookie of the Year.

Wiggins will officially be named on Thursday.

Wiggins was the top overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers and was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in August.

Wiggins averaged 16.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.0 steals in 36.2 minutes per game as a rookie, appearing in all 82 games.

No surprise there. I still say it's a fair selection. Mirotic has earned himself All-Rookie honours, but his increased role, playing time, and production came too late in the season to really have a shot at earning ROY honours. Wiggins has been doing his thing all season, getting better along the way.

Wiggins actually played better as the crappy Wolves team got depleted even more. He has had to carry so much of a load and still impressed. He deserves it.

Of course, he played on a really bad team so it's fitting his advanced stats go down.

Ageed. Advance stats pointed out how bad he was, lol. I see an athlete trying to play basketball as of right now. But I do believe he will improve through the next few years. The "next LeBron" label definitely appears to be out of reach for him, but I see a solid 20 ppg scorer with maybe 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Then Tyreke Evans with a better jumpshot but no handle.
I got my Wiggins jersey this weekend tho, gonna get it signed next Blazers-Twolves game I go to.

There is nothing wrong with advanced stats. Wiggins just wasn't efficient but put up great raw stats. Even if he posted his numbers on a winning team, it'd make little difference in advanced stats.

If this was veteran's numbers, it'd be a cause for concern. But he's 19. For a 19 year old to put up such nice raw numbers, it's nice and you can see the potential regardless advanced stats. LeBron didn't have a great rookie year in terms of advanced stats either. Over the course, he added efficiency, and tuned his game. Being young has definitely has more room to grow.

A case you don't want Wiggins to be is Tyreke Evans. Evans had a near 20-6-6 rookie season. But his game never developed even though he was only 20.

The Wolves put Wiggins to a test. Early in the season, he was given a LBJ type of role. He just didn't have the dynamical offense and handle. He's going to be a different type of player, and definitely not LBJ similar. Let's not fool ourselves, LBJ is not just a rare player but ultimate rare with unseen level of skills with unseen physique: Magic Johnson in Karl Malone's body. Wiggins right now looks more to be on the way to become Iggy on steroids, which also could turn out really well.

Sounds about right to me. He quietly gets his numbers. I saw him on April 8th @ The Blazers game, and I saw lots of missed layups.. I checked the box score after. Turned ou that Wiggins had 29. He's a quiet scorer. He doesn't seem to explode in volume, he just steadily accumulates points through each quarter.

Iguodala was efficient from the start.

Wiggins just scored more points but took 9 more shots per 100 and 7 more per game. He wasn't efficient. He wasn't better at anything and his stats don't really scream AI.

His stats are more similar to that of Rookie Rudy Gay.

As far as what he could become, there is so many ways for him to go. He can develop in so many areas. Then again, he could disappoint like Tyreke did.

Obviously they are athletic players, one plays both ways other has the potential, but you can fit a lot of players in that category.

Well I guess I can see Iggy comparison through to thriving as a slasher but also capable of hitting jumpers when presented with a clean look. I like the Rudy comparison better though.

No way. Gay's a solid player, you just have to find the rght system. I suggest he joins Dallas whose system rejuvinated another player's career trajectory after he disappointed.

Gay's not a solid player. He's a shitty player and it's an insult to mention his name in a same sentence with Wiggin's Canadian potential.

No, he's only going to make Dallas worse if he joins them. History doesn't tell you enough? Teams that traded him away got better while the team that acquired him wasn't so fortunate.

There are obviously valid criticisms you can make of Wiggins, but he's just turned 20, with only his rookie season under his belt. It's too early to write him off.

Consider that a lot of people were writing off players like Kevin Durant and John Wall after their rookie seasons, because their advanced stats weren't what they'd later become. LeBron's advanced stats in his first season weren't up to his later standards either, albeit better than most. Now, I'm not saying that Wiggins will turn out like them, or that he won't be a bust; maybe he will, maybe he won't. But at least give him a few years before slapping on the bust label.

I don't mean to convey the bust label at all, that's my fault. I believe he will get numbers and be a good player down the line. What I am saying is that there are some big stepping stones he will have to master first before he hits even the rookie-Tyreke/Rudy level. But he did deserve rookie of the year, no doubt.

What does that even mean?

Gay isn't an efficient player and will probably never be unless he becomes a 15 mpg guy who suddenly has good shot selection. He'll probably become a 15 mpg guy who puts up wild shots and whose team goes to him when they have a broken play.

Wiggins is just a rookie. Rookie Wiggins had similarities with Rookie Gay. He was inefficient this year but could develop in so many areas. His potential is great.

I'm more interested to see Parker, Randle and the Twitter guy.

There are not many rookie of the years that put great efficient stats right from the get go, I think LeBron shot 40% his rookie season.

Wiggins in my eyes is like a young Tmac in his Toronto days and I think that his who he he will develop into as time goes by.

Glancing at some of the numbers - at least offensively - and considering his athleticism, that's probably a fair comparison.
