Brewer to Rockets for Daniels

Postby Kevin on Sat Dec 20, 2014 6:26 am

The Minnesota Timberwolves have agreed to trade Corey Brewer to the Houston Rockets, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Houston will send guard Troy Daniels to Minnesota as part of the Brewer deal, sources said. Minnesota will send forward Ronny Turiaf to Houston with Brewer, but Turiaf could be moved to a third team, a source said.

Turiaf recently had arthroscopic surgery on his right hip and will miss the remainder of the season.

To acquire Brewer, the Rockets used their trade exception from the Jeremy Lin trade to the Los Angeles Lakers. They wanted to complete the deal on Friday because it leaves them 60 days until the Feb. 19 trade deadline when Brewer would be eligible to be traded again.

Houston had been motivated to acquire Brewer especially for his ability to defend at the small forward position. He'll play behind starter Trevor Ariza.

Not a bad pick-up for the Rockets. I don't think it puts them over the top or anything, but it's an alright move. I'd be inclined to start Brewer ahead of Ariza though, and juggling their playing time could be difficult. Worst case scenario, they can trade him in 60 days, I guess.

As for the Timberwolves...it is what it is. Daniels hasn't had much of a run this year, but he seems to have some potential and talent as a scorer. Minnesota is basically just weathering the storm of another tough season, before re-loading via the Draft. Any moves they make are going to be "let's start again", not "let's get better right now".

Nice depth pick up for the Rockets. Should provide solid veteran presence in second unit as well.

Terrence Jones should come back soon. This pushes Motiejunas to the bench role. So perhaps, Brewer/Canaan/Motiejunas are first 3 off the bench for 8 man rotation. Not bad.

As for the Wolves, they're going young with Troy Daniels. I remember Troy Daniels having his moment in the playoffs last year. He seems to be a great shooter perhaps he can further improve he'll be a NBA player for a long time,or not.

Turiaf going to the Sixers, along with a future 2nd round pick. Philly will send Alexey Shved to Houston. Turiaf likely to be waived.

Although this will hurt the Rockets' flexibility next offseason (assuming they elect to keep Brewer and he picks up his player option),this is a better deal for them. Bench just got deeper, a guy that can defend, somewhat athletic, and can create his own shot. More breathing time for Harden and Ariza.

Well for the Wolves, more pieces for them.

Although I'm not sure how Shved can contribute. They still got the Knicks' second round pick next year, and as you know Morey, he can find gems with that pick. Its range is somewhat at numbers 31-40.

Shved's a big (6-6) point guard (5+ assists per 36) having a career year (at age 26 so seems sound) on an expiring contract. They might have some interest in playing him alongside Terry for a few minutes a game. (And swapping on defense obviously.) And if he stinks no problem they're out nothing, if he becomes a third guard or better that's gravy.

Oh, yeah that. Forgot that he was a PG since he was a 2 back in Minnesota. Less playing time for JET, which can also be beneficial to the team and to him.

Last year he did play more actual two because Love was healthy and they were running plays through him. He seems better suited to a backup "point" with the ball in his hands. Kinda like how Lin is wasted when you take the ball away from him.
