Phil Jackson has reached an agreement in principle to oversee the Knicks basketball operations and “president’’ will be in his title, according to a league source.
All that’s left is the lawyers finalizing the last contract details by week’s end before Jackson officially returns to the organization that drafted him and where he won two titles as a player.
The Post has learned Jackson gave the Knicks a verbal commitment on Saturday. The Garden still will not comment on Jackson’s status.
Knicks president/general manager Steve Mills will remain on board in a revised role and work with Jackson.

So will this one kill the Melo going elsewhere rumor then?

This has to be music to ears to the Knicks fans. Phil Jackson won't like Dolan interfering in his business and will try to build the team his way. It will take some time to clear up the Dolan's mess though.

It remains to be seen whether Jackson is capable of having the same kind of success in the front office as he did on the sidelines. However, as writers like Adrian Wojnarowski have pointed out, that may be neither here nor there. If Dolan is going to interfere and undermine, then it doesn't matter who the Knicks hire; chances are, their success is going to be limited by his meddling.

With all due respect to Donnie Walsh and his accomplishments, Jackson is still a bigger "name" in NBA circles, so there might be a slightly better chance of him actually having the clout he's promised. It does still seem highly unlikely, though.

Of course Phil has to take orders from Dolan at the end of the day but his influence should be greater than past Knicks window managers considering his strong repute and respect he's earned throughout. Phil doesn't look like a push over either.

But this doesn't guarantee anything. Successful coach shouldn't necessarily translate into success as a GM. Anything that goes right or wrong will be on Phil, less on Dolan from this day on.

It's more about the outlook. Phil come in as a GM for vast underachievers and what does he have? He has no picks, tied to bad contracts, no salary to sign significant FA, no flexibility, has no young talent to look forward to. He has limited options to make this team better for imminent future. He's in a tough situation to contend nor to rebuild.

I guess you're right about the Knicks' current situation. In 2014/15 the Knicks have a total of $ 45,753,363 to spend for Amar'e (a productive bench player but not worth $ 23,410,988), Andrea (who would better fit with a WNBA team), J.R. Smith (PER 12.7) and Felton (PER 12.5).
Maybe Phil can work some miracles and get rid of Amar'e's and Andrea's expiring contracts during the coming off-season...

If Phil can break the hold CAA has on Dolan and this organization, it'll be a good thing. From everything I've read, it was CAA who convinced Dolan to trade for Bargnani. Grunwald was pushed out because he was against it. Same for Walsh and the Anthony deal.

I'm taking a 'wait-and-see' approach to the Jackson hire. I don't trust Dolan at all. You are what you are.

Dolan reminds me a lot of my boss. He assembles the right people with the proper knowledge and strategies, but ruins everything because he can't lay back and let those people just do the work they are hired for.
Result is all the same, either you quit out of frustration or you get fired...

Isn't lawyer guaranteed six figure job(in usd currency) in Germany and quite possibly better career path? What is this job so special that you gave up being a lawyer?

Problem is, you have way too many lawyers in Germany and I wouldn't even been close to a $-six-figure-income. My current job within the legal adminstration pays me more money. I have more spare time and more days off per year. My income is getting better every year AND I'm becoming a specialist on the field of civil aviation administration, which is knowledge I could also use as a lawyer or within a company... if I wanted to...

I am. There is no reason for him to stay at Knicks. They aren't going to be a contender for the Finals for at least another 2 seasons. And by that time, the prime time for Melo might be over. A Bulls with Rose & Noah(Boozer out) or Rockets with Beard & Superman is much sensible & attractive for a player who badly wants a ring. My money is on the Rockets. But then again, how will Harden fit into the play then?

Phil Jackson can say all he wants, but Melo is leaving.

I don't know, from a couple of the comments he's made, Melo does seem quite enthusiastic about Jackson coming on board. A few things would have to fall into place for the Bulls or Rockets to be able to sign him; I'm not sure that ends up happening, or that he's definitely on the way out. I wouldn't be shocked if he stays.
