Celtics Hire Brad Stevens to replace Doc

Postby Oznogrd on Thu Jul 04, 2013 9:09 am

Wow...I think the guy is an amazing coach but thats quite a jump from a small D1 school straight to a big basketball city. Hoping it works out for him and they give him enough time to find success...

Steve Bulpett: League source says Stevens getting six-year contract with Celtics.

Adrian Wojnarowski: Stevens is shrewd hire for rebuilding Celts: Smart, sure and unlike most NCAA coaches who've made leap - understands players are the stars.

Damn, 6 years is a long contract. The last part about understanding the stars...is that meant to say he'll let Rondo be the coach on the floor without much interference?

That certainly is a long contract to pay out, should he not last the entire duration...quite possible, given the Celtics are entering a rebuilding phase and the blade usually falls on coaches if there isn't much progress within a couple of years, if that. Interesting move.

the only way this guy fails as a head coach is if the celtics do not end in the bottom 3 this season. its clear they dont want to win so each time he does coach his team to victory they will probably fine him

The one he signed with Butler a couple years back ran through 2022!

For sure. Isn't that a little more common in the college ranks, though?

Yes it is.
I'm flat out surprised. Seems as if Sauru is right and tanking is everything we'll see from the Celtics in 2013/14.

That's a real shocker, did not expect the Celtics to go for a coach from the NCAA, let alone Stevens. Good coach, I did not expect this one bit though.

I guess they have a good young coach who doesn't really have insane pressure to bring a title to Boston right away, because a losing season means a shot at Wiggins. Seems like a good situation for Stevens and the plus side is he might have a young star to build around next season.

Edit: Not only is it a long contract, but a pretty big salary too:

The Boston Celtics have hired Brad Stevens as head coach on a six-year contract worth $22 million, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.

Obviously other coaches in the league have higher salaries, but that's a fairly big jump from his Butler contract.

How much does a D1 coach make a year?

I'm sure that the likes of Pitino, Coach K, etc. make a lot more than Stevens but this is what he was earning according to InsideHoops.

It is widely speculated that Stevens’ total package is at least $1 million annually. The Board of Trustees was discussing that amount, perhaps even before Butler reached the Final Four. Stevens’ base salary two years ago was $395,000, and the total package has been estimated at $750,000.

By comparison, Purdue coach Matt Painter recently agreed to a contract worth $1.3 million a year and incentives that could add another $1 million a year. Indiana coach Tom Crean, the state’s highest-paid employee, makes $2.3 million annually.

This is from a report about the time that he signed the extension with Butler, which was about 2010 I think?

Where is Sauru?

To be honest, I think the future of Celtics depends on how Rondo is playing, it doesn't matter who is coaching if Rondo isn't at his full.

Of course, it remains to be seen how long they keep Rondo around.

It will be a miracle if Celtics make it to the playoffs next season. I'm not underrating the guy, but come on, this is like Irving in Cleveland sorta. Shift to Nets Sauru

The East is weak. Heck the Celtics are the third best team in their own division as of now. They are better than the Raptors even with Gay and co. Southeast is only Miami and the Hawks, if they get good players from free agency. Central has the Bulls, Pacers and maybe the Bucks. I believe the Celtics can make the playoffs with that roster.

Without Garnett, Pierce and Terry and with Rondo possibly not being ready to return by the start of the season, their grip on the third spot in the Division is kind of tenuous.

Heat, Pacers, Knicks, Nets, Bulls, and 3 from Hawks/Toronto/Bucks/76ers will be the line-up for the next playoffs from the East imo. Celtics will get their chance only if one of these teams miss their key player due to injury.

They'd probably rather not have their chance at the Playoffs as they enter an era where they're blowing everything up and starting again. As tough a season as it will be, if it yields the number one pick then they'll grin and bear it.
