Dunlap Will Not Return as Head Coach of Charlotte Bobcats

Charlotte Bobcats President of Basketball Operations Rod Higgins announced today that the team has relieved Mike Dunlap of his duties as head coach. The search for his successor will begin immediately.

“Rich Cho and I conducted our season-ending review and met with Coach Dunlap to reflect on this season. As an organization, it was decided that we needed to make a change with the head coach position,” Higgins said. “We want to thank Mike for his contribution and wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

Not particularly eyebrow-raising given their 21-61 record, but hiring a new head coach every year doesn't strike me as a viable long term solution by any stretch of the imagination. With a young roster that obviously doesn't have the talent to be a contender anytime soon, anyone they bring in is going to have to be given more rope than that.

It would be nice if the new head coach to be hired is recommended by Rich Cho instead of just Jordan making the decision by himself on who the coach will be. Jordan should trust his GM more or let the people he hired do their job.

I've read that he's been doing that a little more in recent times, but has also set them a pretty frugal budget. Understandable and a sound strategy from a business perspective, but at the same time it makes it difficult for them to make a pitch to higher profile coaches.
