Collins, 62, has one year left on a four-year deal, but has told management he won't return to the sidelines. Collins' possible return to the franchise in another role – perhaps in the front office – hasn't been ruled out, a source said.

Ownership wanted him to return for the final season of a contract that would've paid him $4.5 million, one source said, but Collins informed owner Josh Harris of his decision to leave in recent days.

With Collins leaving and organization president Rod Thorn likely to move into a consultant's role at season's end, the Sixers organization will be in flux. General manager Tony DiLeo was promoted into his job a year ago, but it's unclear if ownership will stay with him or seek to hire an ultimate decision-maker over him.

I read another article on Yahoo! NBA yesterday that suggested that the Sixers were actually hoping he'd walk away from the final year of his deal.

Not exactly a surprise. It's been a disappointing year for the Sixers following the big trade in the offseason and Bynum missing the entire season. Combine that with the usual rumblings of players being unhappy with Collins/tuning him out, and it was only a matter of time.

Unfortunately, it's about time we changed our coach. An offense based on long 2s and Hawes handoffs, not developing young players even in meaningless games, playing Jrue a thousand minutes in meaningless games and taking too much control over personal decisions resulted in him not bringing too much good to this team anymore. Who knows if we can get someone better though.

if nothing else, there's probably an assistant coach somewhere in the league that's ready for the opportunity to be a head coach and will shine given the right opportunity. The next Tom Thibodeau, if you will.

Johnson's a good coach who might still be with the Nets if not for some injuries and a bad run in December last year, but he does seem to wear out his welcome, a la Scott Skiles. Either Van Gundy would be a good choice, though I'd rather it be Stan so that we still get JVG's commentary on ESPN.

Out of those I'd prefer either Shaw, one of the Gundy brothers or Hollins. I'd stay away from Brown and Johnson.

You know you're a bad coach when your coach killer best player prefers the last coach he killed than you.

Other than Jrue Holiday no one in the Sixers are good iso players in Johnson's iso happy system.

His run with the Mavs? What he did was place a defense with that team since the offense was already established from Don Nelson's tenure, bam Finals appearance. Then Don Nelson coaching the Warriors dismantled his/the Mavs offense and Johnson wasn't able to do shite.

Johnson can't adjust (just ask Wade and the referees) and I still think he's a bad coach despite a Finals appearance, same with Byron Scott.

Perhaps "decent" or "adequate" would be fairer terms than "good", given his flaws. In any case, it wouldn't be a wise idea for the Sixers to place him atop their shortlist.

I'd use neither. I prefer a rental of Scott Skiles over Johnson just so this 'young' roster can develop. But hiring Skiles would be redundant since his coaching style is a bit like Collins and I'm sure none of the players want that lol.

I wouldn't mind D'Antoni. Sixers star player is a PG, don't have a post player, full of swingmen, not much of a bench, if Sixers get some 3-point shooters it will be D'Antoni heaven. 50 win seasons while being eliminated in the 2nd round here we come!

No thanks. One trojan horse from Hollywood is enough. I guess live by 3-die by 3 is better than live by long2-die by long2, but D'Antoni is still one of the last guys I'd want to see on the Sixers' bench.
