Dream Team vs 2012 Team USA

Postby Andrew on Mon Jul 16, 2012 11:45 pm

By now, everyone's probably aware of Kobe's claim that the current Team USA could beat the fabled 1992 Dream Team.

"Well, just from a basketball standpoint, they obviously have a lot more size than we do — you know, with [David] Robinson and [Patrick] Ewing and [Karl] Malone and those guys," Bryant said. "But they were also — some of those wing players — were also a lot older, at kind of the end of their careers. We have just a bunch of young racehorses, guys that are eager to compete.

"So I don't know," Bryant continued, the trace of a smile beginning to play its way across his face. "It'd be a tough one, but I think we'd pull it out."

Jordan laughed, Barkley laughed, Pippen disagreed and Magic Johnson had other thoughts, as did Stacey King and James Worthy, just to throw a few reactions from Dream Teamers and other former NBA players out there.

I'd say it's feasible that they could defeat the Dream Team in a game and after all, it's not like Kobe is going to say "Oh yeah, they'd wipe the floor with us". Still, I'd have to take the Dream Team eight or nine times out of ten. Contrary to Kobe's recollection, a lot of the players were under 30 and in their prime, not to mention the Dream Team would have a huge advantage with David Robinson and Patrick Ewing (as he did actually note). It's not a knock on the current Team USA, the Dream Team was simply an amazing squad of all-time greats and Christian Laettner. They're still my pick in this fantasy matchup...but what a game it would be.

As a competitive athlete, it's obvious you'll say you could beat them.

As a fan, heck to the heck no.

Yeah, I watched Kobe's interview a few days ago but didn't think it was nothing biggie. The media got the answer they wanted to hear. Lolz. Nothing wrong for Kobe to think his team can win and the team USA need confidence as well. As for the discussion, I am all for the Dream team but it will sorta depend on the rules as well. But about 8 times out of 10, I think the Dream team should take it.

People should applaud Kobe for saying what others are too afraid to. It is what it is. Kobe is obviously not going to put another team over his just like nobody else would.

I don't think they would be able to beat the dream team, but if I get a hold of those teams within 2K12 or 2K11 I can upload a game of it to youtube to get a rough idea...

It's an assumption but I think the 2012 Team USA has pretty much no shot if the game was played under old rule, but maybe the Dream team could get into a foul trouble under today's circumstance.

The current team has no post players. 92 had Malone,Barkley,Robinson, and Ewing to go to down low.

Meh, even Redeem Team was much better than the current USA team. No way this team could beat the Dream Team.

Maybe hand/ forearm checking? But I do not know whether that rule existed in international basketball.

Different era, different basketball. Illegal defense(no zone), hand checking, no easy T era.

There was no illegal defense rule even in 1992, zone defense was and still is allowed under international rules.
If you're going for hypothetical matchups might as well make it international rules and not NBA rules since both Dream Team and 2012 Team USA were built for international basketball. :facepalm2:

Thank you genius. To add on it, rule on Zone D in the NBA was changed in 01 season. Just was saying the outcome might vary depending on the rules. Why that had to be dragged is beyond me as well.

Who's dragging it? By the time of my previous post it was still in discussion.

Why thank you for that very useless trivia.

Your previous post was certainly informative and contributes greatly to the discussion and shows your outstanding and unquestionable intellectual capacity to engage in logical discussion.

Using such words as 'u mad lolz', 'good job, great effort' still doesn't hide your intellectual impotence or retardation, even if they are meant as jokes.
