All-Star point guard Deron Williams has agreed to a five-year, $100 million contract to remain with the Brooklyn Nets.

I think I'ld rather see Dallas rebuild, then go back to 1st round exits every year w/ Nash/Dirk/Marion, unless we don't have the draft picks to do it.

This is a gutting blow, but realistically I knew he would choose Brooklyn. He heard the rumours about Dwight and the Joe Johnson deal was good in his case.....

This will really test Mark and Donnie. Can they come up big?

Not too surprising, I guess. At the very least it means more money, which is difficult to pass up at the height of your earning power. On top of that, the Nets have made a couple of moves to load up on talent and while it seems unlikely that they'll jump to the top of the standings, the Mavericks aren't in a much better position out West.

It's a huge blow for Dallas though, a setback in transitioning into a new era as Dirk nears the end of his career.

With Howard going to Brooklyn becoming more and more unlikely (is it impossible now), I wouldn't be against that move.

Yeah, picking up Paul and Howard would certainly ease the pain of losing out on Williams, and then some. I wouldn't be all that surprised if Paul remains with the Clippers though; I know it goes against their history to be that fortunate, but that's my gut feeling at the moment.

A year or two of Howard and Nowitzki together is definitely intriguing; after that, they can obviously build around Howard. Not too shabby at all.

Mavs should go after Steve Nash now that they have lost Terry. With Jason Kidd being an improved perimeter shooter, having both of them in the backcourt wouldn't be a bad idea. That is of course if he doesn't retire or go to another team, which would still leave a good opportunity for Nash to return to Dallas.

cuban screwed his team, from being a championship team-lottery bound(other west teams are deeper now)..did'nt offer chandler,terry(felt insulted), w/c IMO were essential to their title-run..and reportedlly cuban did'nt offer dwill MAX contract..i guess dirks gonna be lonely now..

The Mavericks management had a choice when the team won. But it took a lot of unlikly-to-happen-events in Mavericks' championship run, in nearly every series and that I think made them afraid of investing big in Tyson and JJ. Instead of adjustment, the changes were made.

It's too bad we might have to see Dirk with mediocre supporting casts for perhaps what is his last few years of prime. I wouldn't mind him asking for a trade.

cuban after their championship planned ahead to chase for dwill this off-season, they choose to gamble. didn't offer chandler(their x factor last finals) & terry to long term contracts thus made them leave dirk alone in dallas. sadly didn't work for him or either dirk..now kidd chooses NY over dallas, it's not good to overpay an fisher/sessions/felton/lin?..

Sessions is a big step down from D-Will, but that wouldn't be an awful move for them.

The Mavs also let Nash go back in the day and while it took them a while to win a championship, they got one (and two Finals appearances) while Nash and the Suns never could get over the hump. Things are looking a bit glum for Dallas at the moment after a long string of very respectable to great seasons, but all is not lost. They'll have their opportunities to build anew.
