MIAMI -- Heat forward LeBron James is the NBA's MVP for a third time, putting him alongside some of the game's all-time greats.

A person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press that James will be announced Saturday as this year's winner of the league's top individual honor, and that he'll be formally presented with the trophy by commissioner David Stern on Sunday afternoon before Miami hosts Indiana in Game 1 of an Eastern Conference semifinal series.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the league has not announced the results.

It was pretty obvious he was going to win it. You could make a good case for Chris Paul but LeBron had one of the best seasons ever and is easily the best player in the NBA.

James vs Durant was a good story throughout the season, but it's easily LeBron that's MVP, at least Durant got a scoring title

I wouldn't say the best but probably the third best. People seem to forget how great he was as a Cavalier.

Anyways the MVP award has gone a marketing tool for the NBA for last decade or so. Glad to see somebody deserving it to win it for this season.

Its been a long time since a season MVP get the finals MVP as well. Tim Duncan was the last to do it in 2002-2003.

If Lebron claims he is better than Michael Jordan, this is the 1st step to prove it. Michael Jordan did this 4 times, and the players who took the season MVP from him (Barkley and Malone), both he defeated in the 1992-93 and 1996-97 NBA finals accordingly.

I'd have to say Kobe personally only won it twice. Back in early 2k it was all Shaq show in LA. And I'm not saying he wasn't a big part of those championships, but he was the 2nd string on that team, while MJ was the #1 guy on all of the 6 runs to the title in Chicago. My point is comparing Kobe to MJ jewelery-wise they come pretty close, but impact-wise MJ is head and shoulders above Kobe.

As much as I love the Lakers and hate the Heat, Lebron is gonna write the history on this day forward.


Micheal Jordan and Scottie Pippen were the first two players to win an NBA Championship and Olympic gold medal in a single year. Only Scottie Pippen won it twice in 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Micheal Jordan, like Scottie Pippen, had 2 Olympic Gold Medals in 1984 Los Angeles and 1992 Barcelona Olympics respectively.


However, Micheal Jordan is the first and the only person to win the Season MVP, Finals MVP and Olympics Gold medal in a single year. That all happened in 1991-1992 NBA Season, 1992 NBA Finals and 1992 Barcelona Olympics accordingly.

Dwayne Wade and Lebron James will be the 2nd Duo to win a championship and a olympic gold medal in a single year. OR the first big three to win it all in a single year - if Bosh is still with Team USA.

Well-deserved. A case could be made for players like Durant and Paul, both of whom would've been fair selections in their own right. The right call was made though, recognition for a fine season by LeBron. I'd say it's not the hardware he's most interested in, but it's another feather in his cap.
