Pistons to retire Dennis Rodman's number on April Fools

Postby Rip32 on Sat Feb 12, 2011 8:40 am

ESPN wrote:AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- The Detroit Pistons plan to retire Dennis Rodman's No. 10 during a halftime ceremony later this season.

Rodman, the eccentric rebounding specialist who helped the Pistons win NBA titles in 1989 and 1990, will be honored April 1 when the Pistons host the Chicago Bulls, a team Rodman won three championships with from 1996 to 1998.

Detroit rookie Greg Monroe currently wears No. 10 and will be allowed to keep doing so.

Rodman averaged 8.8 points and 11.5 rebounds in 549 games with the Pistons. He was the league's defensive player of the year in 1990 and 1991.

This, combined with the pending sale of the team, is great news. Rodman is one of the most underrated players of all time, and he was a huge part of those Championship-winning Pistons' teams. He might be a crazy sunuva bitch, but he deserves this (as well as being in the Hall of Fame).

Cool. HOF the next step now. Just give him the honors he deserves. (although that pic is so damn ugly, I don't want to scroll up once again because I might throw up then, goddam no)

Rodman deserves this. But heck he deserves to be in the HOF , he was the best rebounder that has ever played and was an NBA icon.

They would have shot themselves right in the foot if that's the case. I have a feeling that Rodman picked April 1st himself.

Well deserved.. He was a monster rebounding machine.. And he also promoted the NBA in another way, with his behavior and his coloured hair

I remember in NBA Live 98, when you played with the Bulls, Rodman had a green hair, the other game a brown one

Let's see how he reacts in the presentation

Yeah, that was one of the nifty minor features in the early days of NBA Live. NBA Live 96 even included a few different portraits for Rodman, so you knew which hair colour would be showing up when you saw the portrait during the starting lineup screen.

The same thought crossed my mind when I saw the date but I highly doubt it. It wouldn't be a particularly classy move.

Should Bulls retire his jersey?

Definitely, he more than made up for the void left behind by Horace Grant. I still remember the 96 Finals where he had TWO games with 11 offensive rebounds - tying the NBA record. I think he was equally as important, although in another area, as Jordan and Pippen during those runs (Y)

He wasn't a Bull for that long, but what he did in those years are legendary

I'd be in favour of that too, I think it'd be an appropriate gesture to make next season. It doesn't pay to go overboard retiring jersey numbers for your former players but I do think he's a significant enough player in Bulls history to warrant it and it's not like #91 is a common number that they'd be putting out of commission.
