The Houston Rockets Thread

Postby Axel The Great on Thu Sep 16, 2010 7:53 am

Searched for a thread like this, couldn't find any.

Poll added. Do you think Yao Ming can maintain his health throughout the majority of the season? The Rockets' hopes ride with him this season, but even without Yao, they had a winning season last season. I think if Yao can just average 13-15 ppg, pull 7-8 rpg, and a block or two per game, the Rockets will be fine, as long as everybody else contributes.

On the subject of Patrick Patterson, how does he play? I watched Kentucky games last season, but I really only payed attention to Wall and Cousins; had I known Patterson was a future Rocket, I would've payed more attention to him.

Overall, I'm pretty optimistic about the Rockets' season. At most they will probably get 5th seed, maybe even make it to the second round of the playoffs again. What are your opinions? :)

Given Yao's injury-prone history, I can't really say, but I think I he'll play about half the season. If more, great for the Rockets, if less, the Rockets may be screwed. Either way, they'll be on the low end of the playoffs.

I think he'll play between 41-55 games, big men and foot injuries when their 7'0 and above, especially 7'3 and above; go hand in hand sometimes. Look at big z's foot injuries during the 90's with the cavaliers. I see the rockets being a 5th-8th seed with at least a 45 win record. I think Yao will average 15 ppg and 8 rpg as well, but i don't think he'll make the allstar team unfortunately.

There's doubt there. The votes he'll get from China will help big time.

The Rockets will impose a 25mpg limit for Yao Ming at the beginning of the season-- NBA.com

Seems like a sound plan. I hope that Yao can make a comeback and play out the rest of his career on his terms, but all those years of playing competitive ball without a break have certainly taken their toll. They might want to consider holding him out of back-to-backs as well.

I'll take 56-65 games in the poll.

I'm with 21-40, because of his tallness and chronical injuries.

Yao will not play over 24 minutes in one game. I really think that's a pretty harsh way to manage Yao's minutes, as even a second over 24 minutes is too long. But in the long run, it is better to have Yao for half a game than to not have him at all.

Yao will play no more than 24 minutes per game, Rockets vice president and athletic trainer Keith Jones said. There will be no exceptions. If Yao has played his 24 minutes and the Rockets have the ball and eight seconds on the clock to make up a one-point deficit, Yao will not play those eight seconds.

It might be overkill, but there's probably some merit in it and on the bright side it seems they're sensible enough to realise it's an approach they can (and should) re-evaluate as the season progresses:

And that’s why the Rockets left some wiggle room to tweak this system as the season wears on.

Presumably that means there's a possibility of backing off a bit and playing him those final eight seconds of a one point game, even if he's at 23:57.

If they use this way, Yao can play +41 games. Not much minutes, as less injury chance. Because of Yao, Brad Miller looks like place for Yao and help to the team with outside shooting.

Yeah, I think Brad Miller was a good addition to the Rockets. He'll likely help on offense and maybe a little on defense. With Yao out of the game, the Rockets can utilize Martin and Brooks' speed and push the tempo of the game, which will result in better offense.

If he gets his 2000th post, I'll take shadow's advice and drink a can of pesticide! Wait, that sounds like something an idiot like Badger would do. :shake:

Dammit, why do I keep going off topic? OK, to get on topic, here's Yao's recent workout (I think), which is from a few weeks ago.

He's really a good acquisition for Houston. The opposing team will extend their defense, which will lead to open driving lanes for Martin and Brooks.
