Nowitzki opts out

Postby Patr1ck on Wed Jun 30, 2010 3:22 am

ESPN just confirmed that he messaged the Mavs, officially opting out. Good for him. Another good PF on the market. I wonder if he will actually shop teams or just rework his contract with Dallas.

Well, this is interesting. I still envisage him being a career Maverick, but this could definitely affect the mega-frenzy of the next couple of weeks.

I think he'll do what Kidd did and just sign with the Mavs. Though many teams will definetely be interested in his services, especially those who miss out on Lebron, Bosh, Amare etc.

He has many options now. It was indeed a great move by Nowitzki for himself, can't say the same for Cuban.

Nowitzki said awhile back he was going to opt out and do everything he could to stay with Dallas. We'll see if that stays true.

This offseason is either going to be one of the best ever or the most boring. I will be amused if no one moves. But it seems pretty likely at least a few will.

With his salary off the books, is it possible for Dallas to sign a free agent and retain Dirk via bird rights?

Retarded people shouldn't be allowed at the NLSC. :cheeky:

Anyways, imo, it's impossible to see Dirk outside of Dallas. When a player has been with the same team for his whole career, it's weird to think of them leaving. If Dirk does leave, what options does Dallas have?

Not really. They were already in luxury tax hell. There is a fair chance they get a major FA via a sign & trade though.

No doubt other teams will make their pitches, but right now I'd pick him to negotiate a new deal with the Mavs.

I have read somewhere that if he can sign a new deal with the Mavericks, it will have a no-trade clause or something like that. If Nowitzki goes any other than the Mavericks, I don't think I will be able to stand watching him on his new team despite me a big fan of Dirk.

I'm thinking he's after the security with longer contracts. He's what, 32(?). Probably last big fat contract he's chasing just in case next year doesn't pan out to be great. Cuban of course will give him that.

Certainly feasible, but I'd say unlikely. At this point I'd pick Dirk to stay in Dallas.

Agreed; maybe it's because this free agent class also includes James and Bosh, but I haven't seen too many teams especially eager to obtain Dirk Nowitzki. His reputation as someone who crashes and burns in the playoffs probably has a lot to do with it--while he's tremendous in the regular season, he just doesn't seem like the type of player who's good to build around for a championship contender team. That, and he's only getting older now. Nowitzki's best bet for a good contract is to probably resign with Dallas.

dont kid yourself, lots of teams would take dirk, problem is none of them really think they can get him. why spend resources on a player who pretty much is set where he is?

Agreed, though I think Static is right in suggesting Dallas will pay him the most; partly because they can under the salary cap rules but even if he were to take a paycut, I see Cuban committing to a bigger deal than other owners would be willing to given Dirk's age. As I said, I'm sure other teams will make their pitches and Dirk might humour them or even give strong consideration to a couple of possibilities but right now, I think he'll ultimately remain a Maverick.

yeah dallas wont get a better offer some place else unless he is still unsigned near the end of free agency and some gm who still has cap room is worried about his job so he offers him the world. even then i dont see dirk leaving
