The New Jersey Nets have agreed to trade Eduardo Najera to the Dallas Mavericks for forwards Kris Humphries and Shawne Williams, sources told Yahoo! Sports Friday night.
The deal won’t be officially completed until Monday, after which the Nets will buy out Williams’ contract. Williams was sent away in training camp by the Mavericks and hasn’t played this season.
I think this is the most noteworthy part of the trade, certainly the bit which we can say the most about:
To open a roster spot, New Jersey will also cut center Sean Williams, who was the 17th pick in the 2007 draft out of Boston College. Williams has been a huge disappointment for the Nets, who believed the 6-foot-10 center had the ability to become one of the NBA’s best shot-blockers.
Perhaps he never really got the opportunity to prove himself, but that certainly will be a disappointing end to an experiment I thought might work out for the Nets. Williams had his share of issues and I remember there being talk about attitude problems but I thought he might have enough potential and talent coming in that it would prevail and ultimately overcome all of that. I suppose you can't really call him a bust at the 17th pick but he's a project that certainly hasn't worked out so far. I wonder if anyone else will take a chance on him. Gerald Green got a few opportunities around the league, with Williams being a big man who might still have some promise left I'd be surprised if he doesn't at least get a 10 day contract somewhere at some point or end up in someone's training camp next season.
