Throwback jersey games should include throwback courts

Postby KyotoCarl on Fri Dec 18, 2009 7:00 pm

I've always thought the Hardwood classics night was a great idea for the NBA, i.e. teams playing in their old jersey's, but I've always thought something was missing.
Seeing that the 76ers have gone back to using, more or less, their old court, I think it would be really cool if NBA teams would play on a replica of a court from an older season.
How cool wouldn't it be if, for example, a team would play on a court which looks like it did back in a season from the 80's? It would really make it feel like a Hardwood Classics night having the old court, and both the home team and away team playing with their retro jerseys,

I'm sure this is something that we may get to see, at least, I hope so. Seing the 76ers court this year, which has minimal design, has made me kinda happy. It looks very basic, but still, very classy.

Yeah that's not a bad idea. If nothing else, I'd like to see more retro nights where both teams wear throwback jerseys, especially teams that have a storied history with one another. The Lakers and Celtics would be the obvious example here, both teams could don the 60s or 80s retros when they square off to pay home to their own heritage but also their rivalry.

Putting on a jersey is a bit easier/faster than constructing a court. I'm over the throwback thing now, it was really cool to begin with then it got ridiculous and seemed to be happening every second game and now it's just boring.

Yea I gotta agree with Jae, the only way I could really care about the throwbacks now is if they ran something like the NFL did early this season with the AFL jerseys. So it was special and not just random.
Opinions are my own.

It does work a little better when a team is celebrating a milestone year in its existence or otherwise kept to a minimum, I'd certainly agree there. But when they do break out the retros, I'd prefer both teams to be wearing them for the occasion.

It wouldn't be too difficult if you were just changing the sidelines and a couple of the court logos. They change the Staples Centre court fairly regularly, depending on whether the Clippers or the Lakers have home games.

That said, I don't know if the arena sponsors would be especially pleased with the idea.

Replacing some of the panels with the retro logos would be sufficient. I shouldn't think it would be an impossible task, given the way they assemble and disassemble the court in between games.

I also agree with you, but, if teams with a storied history, like someone said, manufactured one court per season that they could roll out for a special throwback game, that would be exciting.

One good example was this preseason when LA played in the Coloseum again. Had they had the old court with it, along with the 80's uniforms, that would really had been a treat.

The idea is old, but like you guys have said, Lakers/Celtics would be a good time to throw on some retro jerseys. I think it's dumb when you see one team in throwbacks and the other team in their jerseys from today. Maybe that's just me though. Courts would be so expensive to change for 4 games a season (Unless it's an arena that shares with an NHL team (United Center, Verizon Center, TD Banknorth Garden)).

If they're not replacing the entire floor then it wouldn't be unfeasible. Consider that they are able to add new designs to courts during the Playoffs, NBA Finals and All-Star Weekend and like I said, courts are assembled and disassembled between games anyway so it's far from impossible.
