Doctor Could Save Kings $6.2M

Recently-retired forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim traveled to New York City on Wednesday to meet with a doctor that could save the Kings $6.2 million this season.

The doctor, appointed by the NBA, would need to confirm a diagnosis of severe arthritis in order for Sacramento to trim more than six million off of their 2008-09 payroll.

Abdur-Rahim hasn't played since Nov. 12, 2007.

A very similar situation to the one involving Darius Miles in Portland, though considering Abdur-Rahim announced his retirement and is currently on the Kings' coaching staff it's probably going to be more amicable.

His retirement does seem a lot more certain and the fact that he already has a job in the NBA after his career would suggest this would be a move that wouldn't bite them in the ass.

Exactly, he seems to have basically made it official that he's done and won't be making any further attempts to play. I can't see there be any hard feelings or controversy on this one.
