A better present? That's a pretty big call. Dallas still has Dirk, Howard, Kidd and Stackhouse. I know they didn't gel well last year but that team was thrown together on the fly and with a new coach and a training camp together they have the ability to challenge in the West.
Also, Jason Kidd has never made a team worse in his career. This could end up being the first time but the West, (edit: imo lulz), is pretty wide open this year. The Lakers could have a talent overload. Where do you play Bynum? Do you force him back into the starting lineup where he and Gasol probably won't be as effective together? What happens to Odom? Off the bench = waste for a player like him. How do the rest of the role players respond after a significant let down in the finals?
Then who is there? The Spurs are always getting older and will be missing Ginobili for a while. The Rockets are deep (especially if Artest can play power forward on defense) but what happens if Yao or Mcgrady go down in a critical part of the season again? Will Rafer be able to produce like he did last year? The Suns have Amare and pieces that really don't fit anymore. Denver could have been up there but it's hard to see them competing without Camby. Utah and New Orleans could end up being the conference finalists, and Portland could shake things up.
I can't see no reason for why Dallas, if they can restructure the offense to utilise Kidd and their regulars can't at least be competitive in that conference. Can you say the same for the Pacers in the East?
