MVP - Dirk Nowitzki
2nd Place - Shaquille O'Neal
Last place - Vince Carter

Best player on the best team. Shaq is second by merely showing the world what the Lakers are without him. Vince Carter...AKA the "Tin-Man" has been rather embarrassing...from not living up to his own comments to the Nelly concert fiasco to more injuries...

Defensive Player - Ron Artest
2nd Place - Ben Wallace
Last place - Richard Hamilton

Ben Wallace is a close second, but Artest's ability to cover the loads of scoring swingmen on the league is really being put on display this year. Richard Hamilton should be nicknamed Drive-Thru...

Coach of the Year - Isiah Thomas
2nd Place - Don Nelson
Last Place - George Karl

Like it or not, the Quick offense is for real. If you watch the Pacers play they get lots of layups off of it. Nellie gets 2nd for convincing the Mavs the play defense. George Karl continues to be boiled in oil for the World Championships...his team's collapse last year...The Sonics endless collapses in the playoffs...quasi-racist comments...the fact that all his players hate him...blah blah blah...

Most Improved - Desmond Mason
2nd place - Kwame Brown
Last place - Dikembe Mutombo

Most Improved started out belonging to Kwame, but he went back to normal form after the first few games. Desmond, on the other hand, has been a stream of highlights due to defenses' having to respect his much improved jumper. He should be starting soon. Dikembe is still a great defensive center. The problem is that he knew he was going to play less minutes but is now complaining about it and is a tad more brittle then he was.

Sixth Man - Desmond Mason
2nd place - Bobby Jackson
Last place - Vin Baker

Same as above for Desmond. If MJ hadn't demanded to start he'd be in the 2nd place slot. I've quite seen a team lose energy the way Vin Baker drains the Celtics when he steps on the court.

Rookie of Year - Yao Ming
2nd place - Dajuan Wagner
Co-Last place - Mike Dunleavy & Chris Wilcox

"Yaaaaoo Minnnnng...Yaao Miiiing!" All the critics and detractors seem to be joining the chorus. Second place to Dajuan Wagner who has been putting up Iverson scoring nights at times. Mike Dunleavy...or "The White Piece of Bread" as he is known to angry foreign Warriors fans...baffled me as a third pick in this Draft and is playing a lot more like the mid-to-late first rounder he should've been. I was likewise baffled when certain people on this board (sounds like "Boctor P" ) picked Chris Wilcox to be ROY on a team with Elton Brand and Melvin Ely already at his position...and I still have no idea what they thought would happen.

GM of the Year - Geoff Petrie (Sacramento Kings)
2nd place - Rod Thorn (Nets)
Last place - Tie - Scott Layden (Cavs), Jim Paxson (Cavs), Garry St. Jean (Warriors)

Geoff Petrie (is that how you spell it?) deserves some recognition for his ongoing serial rape of the NBA. Chris Webber for Mitch Richmond? Mike Bibby for Jason Williams? Jumaine Jones for Mateen Cleaves??? Amazing. Signing Keon Clark was nice work also. Rod Thorn made the Nets better than last year with his free agent signings alone as well as stealing Nenad Krstic in the first-round of the Draft. It's actually just hard to find a second place GM and I really did this for Last Place. Layden continues to turn the Knicks into the Washington Generals. Garry St. Jean somehow managed to blow a 3rd pick, mid-first round pick AND the first pick in the second round all in the same draft. Jim Paxson...Lamond Murray for Michael Stewart? What the hell are you doing?

This one looks agreeable, although you know just about every "Last place" can be argued. I don't think Rip is THAT bad.

I don't think Kwame should even be considered here based on just the few games. He hasn't shown the improvement after the first couple of games. A guy that should get some consideration is Alvin Williams, he's improved a lot. Stephen Jackson also seems considerable.

Ming and Wagner are indeed looking great, and look like the most likely candidates for ROY at the moment. Some other candidates might be Stoudemire and Gooden.

I don't think someone should be awarded on achievements from previous years (it doesn't work like that in other categories either), no matter how good they might've been. So that takes out Petrie, since his only achievement this season was signing Clark. What about the Sixers GM (dunno the name) they made some good moves and drafting.

Vince has generally been a mess. I just say Last place to highlight someone who definitely does NOT deserve the award.

I messed up a bit on the 6th Man award and completely forgot Michael Redd as Laddas reminded me. It's a REALLY close call between Mason and Redd. So I will cop out and give the Most Improved Award to Mason and the Sixth Man Award to Redd. 8)

Yea he could be up there. I also forgot Jerry West...he drafted well...acquired Wesley Person (from "Special" Jim Paxson) for nothing...found a good coach from nowhere and plucked his starting shooting guard in deepest darkest Europe. It's a tough call...but I'd actually go with West...he made a number of good moves and Petrie's Cleaves/Jones deal never materialized.

Tremaine Fowlkes?

Yeah. He's been getting minutes in Lamar Odom's absence and has had great performances against a number of scoring forwards. He held Jamal Mashburn to something like 10 points last game.

I was under the incorrect impression that you had to have a center, two forwards and two guards on the All-Rookie Team. The fifth slot is a pretty tough call actually. Jay had that amazing game with the triple double then he kind of faded...Caron has been scoring a bit. I'll stick with Jay for the moment though.

Yes...Kobe's been putting up great numbers...but with him at the helm the Laker ship crashed right into an iceberg. The Sixers have looked great so far and they deserve some recognition. As for KG...he's great...but doesn't deserve the slot over Tim Duncan or Nowitzki right now.

MVP (Top 3)-Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant and Tracy McGrady. (Ithink the Lakers will go on some winning streaks after the all star break, and this will be behind Shaq and Kobe. One of the two steps up big in one game and the other in the next game. I think the Magic will make some noise in the playoffs, if Hill stays healthy.

Defensive Player-Ben Wallace (It aint gonna be anyone else)

Most Improved (Top 3)- Ricky Davis, Richard Jefferson and Stephan Jackson.

6th Man- Michael Redd (I'm hearin ya Laddas, he is the best shooter in the league. He has huge games off the bench, shooting excellent and playing good D. Ray Allen better watch out. I doubt that actually, maybe Redd will get a start when Cassell retires. They could run two shooting guards. They are both good ball handlers.)

ROY (Top 3)- Dajaun Wagner, Yao Ming and Amare Stoudamire. (Any of these guys could get it. They all have had great games and are showing they can do it consistently. Wagner looks like a veteran. Ming looks like he is about to dominate the league and Stoudamire is looking like the next Kevin Garnett

Coach of the Year (Top 3)- Don Nelson, Phil Jackson and Rick Adelman. (Nelson looks like the favourite now, but if Phil can turn this bad start into a great finish he definately deserves it. Adelman might win due to the Kings going so well, but anyone could coach that team and get wins, they have so much talent)

Actually, I've heard that's the major weekness in Redd's game, that he can't put it on the floor and makes bad decisions when pressured. I read this in espn the magazine. However, you may know better if you've seen him play often enough.

I am fully aware of this. I put Shaq and Kobe in the top 3 for MVP because yhe Lakers record is bad now and they are putting up great stats. Once they get on a role these stats will get even better. These aren't the midseason awards, they are what we think the end of season awards are going to be. Phil Jackson is definately in with a chance if he can turn this bad year around.

Most Valuable Player: Shaq, Duncan or Nowitzki

Shaq is an obvious choice, because it was clear how valuable he is to the Lakers while he was sidelined. Duncan's production and importance to the Spurs' franchise is also apparent, although I have my doubts as to whether he'll receive the award two years in a row. Nowitzki is the leader of a red-hot Mavericks team, but the Mavs have a lot of talent, so to say he's so much more valuable than Nash or Finley could be questioned. Without them, who knows if Dirk could still keep the Mavs atop the league.

Sixth Man: Michael Redd

All aboard the Michael Redd Bandwagon! 16.2 ppg, 4.7 rpg in 29.7 mpg, shooting 47% from the field, including 45% from downtown. Can produce when given the minutes, and a more than adequate fill-in starter. The credentials of a good sixth man.

Most Improved: Michael Redd

Defensive Player of the Year: Elton Brand

4th in rebounds per game (11.8), 1st in blocked shots (3.18), averaging 1.14 steals per game for good measure. Throw in the fact he's a 6'8" forward in the Western Conference, and those statistics look pretty impressive. Still, by the season's end, a Ben Wallace or Ron Artest will have probably earned the award.

Rookie of the Year: Yao Ming

A couple of weeks ago, Jay Williams would have been my pick, but he's been a little inconsistent - and Ming has been more than a little impressive. After a slow start, has boosted his numbers up to 11.4ppg, 7rpg, 1.6bpg, while shooting 59% from the field and around 71% on free throws, all in just under 23mpg. He's ranked first among all rookies in Efficiency, having overtaken Drew Gooden, who is probably going to be runner-up. Amare Stoudamire and Dajuan Wagner are other guys who could probably challenge Ming as the season goes on.

Coach of the Year: Isiah Thomas

Didn't expect the Pacers to do this well, even if their roster is nowhere near terrible. Yes, they're in the East, but still...for some reason, I expected them to be around the 6th-8th spot again.

Executive of the Year: Joe Dumars

On paper, the Stack/Rip trade looked like Washington came off the best, but in practice, Rip has been the player the Pistons needed. Detroit is 14-7, Washington is 9-12.

As usual, I expect to be proven wrong when it's all said and done.
