Here are some things you might try in order to help the game run moresmoothly:
![]()
1) Close down background applications: Ctrl+Alt+Del and end task everything except Explorer and taskmanager/systray. If have an ATI video card, and have the program "aticwd32" in the background, DO NOT close it down.
2) Try cleaning out your temp folder. To do this:
1. Click on "Start" and then "Run"
2. Type "TEMP" in the field labeled "Open:"
3. Click on "OK"
4. Select everything in that folder and delete it
4a. Click on "Select All" in the "Edit" menu
4b. Click on "Delete" in the "File" menu
5. Empty your recycle bin
5a. Right click on the recycle bin on your desktop and select "Empty Recycle Bin"
3) Make sure you have the latest drivers installed for the video and audio card. See minimum requirements for supported chipsets - you can download the latest drivers for your video card at their website (i.e. nvidia card drivers can be found at www.nvidia.com and ATI card drivers can be found at www.ati.com ect)
4) You can also try adjusting your video card's hardware acceleration:
1. Click on "Start" and then "Control Panel"
2. Double click on "Display" (You may need to click on "Switch to Classic View" if you don't see display listed)
3. Click on the "Settings" tab, "Advanced", and then "Troubleshoot" (or it may say performance)
4. Move the "hardware acceleration" slider to "None"
If that doesn't work you should try other settings above "None." Depending on your video card you may have more than 8 possible settings; it is in your best interest to try all of them.
5) Turn down or off various detail levels.
There are several detail options that the user can adjust to get the game to run smoother (see below). Access these options by pressing ESC and selecting options when in a game.
Choose software rendering for the type of graphics displayed; Lower screen resolution; lower graphics quality (high, medium, low); lower audio quality (slider bar); turn off sound effects: music, speech, tutorial; turn off pop-up help and turn off confirmations
6) Lower audio acceleration to "basic". You can do this by left clicking on the start button, then highlighting run and left clicking, and in the text box typing in, "DXDIAG". When the DX diagnostic tool comes up click on the sound tab and within that menu you will see the audio acceleration slider bar.
7) If you think this is sound related, try the following options:
A) From the in-game option menu, lower audio quality.
B) Within Windows '98, go to control panel-->multimedia. Under "Playback" choose game compatible or use any available device. Make sure to put a check mark in the box "Use only preferred device."
8) If you have a second CDROM drive try installing using it, be sure to uninstall the game first. After that, if it is still not working or you do not have a second CDROM drive, try installing the game from your hard drive.
1 If the game is installed, uninstall it.
2 Create a new folder on your Desktop
3 Copy all of the files on the CD into the folder you created
After the files finish copying:
4 Run the "Setup.exe" file located in that folder.
9) Try updating your version of Direct X. You can download the latest version of directX here: www.microsoft.com/directx
