99-00 "Big Three" Season

Tue Feb 27, 2007 4:37 pm

As the title suggests, it's a Mavs season.

Quarters: 8minutes
Difficulty: All-Star
Playoffs: 5-7-7-7
Trade Deadline: Yes

After yet another disappointing season, finishing the lockout-shortened 98-99 season at 19-31, but there were a few good signs, especially the performance of Michael Finley. With the acquisitions of two young players, Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki, they are very much looking towards the future rather than now.

Don Nelson, coach of the Mavs, shocked Dallas fans when he announced that he would started the unproven Nowitzki over Gary Trent in their season-opener. The owner was similarly displeased, but many wanted to see what Nelson had cooked up, as he was a great coach, open to new ideas...

2000 dynasty? Oh sweet!

It's in the wrong forum though. We have a dynasty section these days.

Hmm, but there isn't a dynasty in 2000, and I'd prefer to leave this in an old-school board. And well, I'm doing a season, much easier. Oh yeah, I'm doing it on an N64 emulator: I can't find my NBA Live 2000 cartridge, and I don't want to plug in my N64 either...

So either way, half-time recap in season opener against Golden State:

In a sloppy first half, neither team was able to get anything going offensively, with Don Nelson wincing constantly as a series of easy lay-ups, dunks and open shots all lipped out. Golden State sealed up a large number of offensive rebounds, which is a worrying sign for the Mavericks, but they failed to capitalise on the number of extra chances they had. The Mavs jumped out to a seven-point lead at the end of the first, but on the back of some good play by Jason Caffey, pulled the margin back to 1 at the half, 33-32. Both Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki looked comfortable shooting the ball, and Mavericks fans will hope they continue in the second half, and for the rest of the season

Dallas Top Performers: Nowitzki: 10 Points, 3 Rebounds; Nash: 12 Points, 4 Assists
GS Top Performers: Caffey: 16 Points, 5 Boards; Jamison: 6 Points, 5 Boards, 2 Blocks.

Third-quarter recap:

In a completely unprecedented change of fortunes, the Mavericks stunned everyone in the Arena with a breathtaking 36-4 third quarter to take the game away from Golden State, on the back of some tough defense and several easy fast-break layups, and shots suddenly dropping in, as if they were making up for the bricks fired by nearly everyone in the first half. The score was 36-69 by the end of the quarter. Game over.

Dallas Top Performer: Nowitzki: 20 Points, 8 Boards

Final recap:

With the game won, Nelson pulled off most of his starters early in the final quarter, and the reserves performed just as well, outscoring the Warriors 22-9. Chris Antsey picked up 4 points and 5 boards, and Erick Strickland came up with a handy 10 points. Mavs win 45-91, a great start to their 99-00 season, and has given fans something to think about, after the great performances of their young duo, Nash and Nowitzki.

Top Performers:

Dallas: Nowitzki (20 Points, 10 Boards, 2 Blocks), Nash (21 points, 11 Assists)
GSW: Caffey (20 Points, 7 Boards), Jamison (10 Points, 8 Boards, 3 Blocks)

Okay, switched to Superstar and 10 minute quarters. I've played a few games on All-Star, back to the norm, with better defence.

DALLAS CRUSH SEATTLE

Michael Finley scored 32 points, Dirk Nowitzki had 18 as Dallas stormed past a disappointing Seattle side to win 100-82. The Sonics were never in it past the first quarter, and only made the scoreline somewhat respectable with some second half points against Dallas bench players. Brent Barry scored 19 for the Sonics.

Dallas 30 24 21 25
Seattle 15 18 24 25

TOP PERFORMERS:

Michael Finley: 32 Points, 4 Boards, 3 Assists

Dallas continue good start with win over Golden State

Dirk Nowitzki had 24 points, a career high and Steve Nash came up big in the final quarter to score 17 points with 7 assists as Dallas came from behind to defeat a disappointing Golden State team.

Both teams were evenly matched in the first half, going into the break 48-47 in favour of Dallas. Although John Starks hit a few treys to give Golden State a five-point cushion, Steve Nash responded with a couple of threes, Cedric Ceballos completed a coast-to-coast dunk, and the Warriors folded. Dallas came out winners 96-87.

Dallas 24 24 18 30
GSW 23 24 24 16

Top Performers:

Dallas: Dirk Nowitzki: 24 Points, 11 Boards, Steve Nash: 17 Points, 7 Assists, Shawn Bradley: 11 Points, 12 Boards, 3 Blocks

GSW: Jamison: 21 Points, 8 Boards, 2 Blocks, John Starks: 18 Points, 4 Assists.

Shaq sinks the Mavericks

The Mavs unbeaten start to the season was ended by a spectacular performance by Shaquille O'Neal and a typically clutch performance by Robert Horry.

The Shaq Attack added 37 Points along with 15 Boards and 6 Assists, while Robert Horry sealed the game with two late tree-pointers. Kobe Bryant had 21 for the Lakers.

For Dallas, Michael Finley scored 25 and Steve Nash scored 18. Dirk Nowitzki had a disappointing night with only 9 points.
