Nba live Controller Setup

Im using a Windows Xp Pro based pc, and i cannot seem to make nba live 99 to work.
When i try to select a controller for a player, it doesn't let me. And when i try to load the game, without selecting a controller, it freezes and ... nothing! I know that others also had the same problem, but i wouldn't want to use cpukiller on my pc (i haven't heard the best for that program).
Is there any other way to fix this?

I had the exact same problem. I installed the patch and now it works great. This will update the roster also so if you want the default roster again you can copy the origdb file off the cd, place it in the Live 99 folder then go into the game and click reset roster.
