Discussion: The current state of modding

Postby Dee4Three on Sat May 28, 2016 4:21 am

Hi all,

I think this is a very relevant thread. It seems like many of the people who mod 2k14, never moved on to 2k16 to assist in the modding community. I wanted to see what peoples thoughts are on this. I currently am bouncing back and forth between 2k14 and 2k16 modding, but I don't have the hex editing skills or blender skills of some folks. I have noticed that Bliss has stuck with 2k14, Erixxx is gone, Vlad/Leftos/Jaosming are working for 2k, GregKwaste seems to have vanished....

Do we think that a part of it is: The modding is much harder in 2k16? I've been looking at the file formats, and some things are very similar. We have gone through 2 years of NBA 2k with no scoreboard/presentation mods... which blows my mind. I am trying (with not a ton of tools to work with) to create presentation mods, and I plan on releasing a "music" tutorial.

This topic is being created to just start the conversation, not to bash anyone. I want to see where people are at with the interest in modding this game.

My guess is that the difficulty (or at least, less straightforward nature) is off-putting to some people who would otherwise get involved in modding the latest game. There's probably other people who prefer NBA 2K14 to NBA 2K16, can't run the games since they became PS4/X1 ports and the minimum requirements were raised, or just like the challenge that comes with breathing new life into an old game and keeping it up to date. It's a question those folks would have to answer themselves, but I imagine that those are the main reasons.

The biggest reason certainly seems to me to be that they can't run the game well.

Mine would be because of how fragile and delicate the game can be while modding it. I'm a pretty lazy guy so I never keep backups which means I have to download the corrupted file again. No thanks.

I know what you are saying, but verifying the game cache makes you lose nothing (as long as its in the modded or shared folder) with the exception of music. I just did it and I lost nothing

You realize that we have had external file support for seven months, right? Corrupted files aren't even a thing anymore. :facepalm2:

The more I get into it, the more moddable this game seems. Here is what we have:

1. Full Cyberface modding
2. Full Court/stadium modding
3. Mostly full art editing (portraits, replacing 2k logos), with the exception of that damn 2k wipe in game... I cant figure that out
4. Jukebox/eventmusic editing (importing as .OGG)
5. Limnonos Modifier (to create our own rosters).
6. Ball modding
7. Global modding (Kevin and SeanJohn did it)

Missing
1. Complete roster editior (So we can clone teams, add teams, and just for ease of use).
2. Offline roster sharing

I don't think I'm really missing anything here. I am using MANY mods (My modded folder is packed). I think this really all came down to a lack of a roster editor....

Correct me if I am wrong..

Seems to be the biggest hurdle.

I'll do my best to learn some new skills to help.... maybe some releases will help jump start things.
