New PC Configuration

Tue Nov 03, 2015 1:13 am

It's time for me to buy a new PC before christmas....there is a local shop near house and I end up with this configuration:

CPU: Intel Quadcore I54590 Lga 1150 3.3ghz Cache 6mb Box Bx80646i54590
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Dissip.Xdream I117Lga1155/1156/775 RrX11718fpR1
Mainboard: Asus H81mPlus 90mb0gi0M0eay0
Ram: Kingston 8gb 1600mhz Ddr3 NonEcc Cl11 Dimm Kvr16n11h/8 X 2 = 16gb
Hard Disk / SSD: Samsung Ssd 250gb 850 Evo Basic 2.5p Mz75e250b/
Video Card: Asus Gtx960Moc2gd5
Network Card: TpLink 150mbps Nano Wireless Usb TlWn725n
OS: Microsoft Sw Ms Windows 7pro+Dvd Coa Adj 32/64bit

Any advice/adjustment to the configuration?

Are you building it yourself? You'll do better and save more by ordering from Newegg.

Re: New PC Configuration

Bump the card up to a 970 for sure, and get a second hard drive (Not SSD, maybe like a 2TB regular drive). Also, go with Win 8.1 and then upgrade to Win10 if you can.

Re: New PC Configuration

I'd change:

- PSU. That's Corsair's lowest range and quite mediocre. Go for something like XFX TS 550w. Or any Seasonic, SuperFlower,.. any from the list.
- Get some better CPU cooler. CoolerMaster 212 EVO or Raijintek Themis, for instance.
- Maybe switch the motherboard to a H97 (eg. ASRock H97 Pro4). That board is fine, but it's meant for ofimatic purposes. At least you got 2x8GB though, as even though 8GB would be enough for now, H81 only has a pair of memory sockets.
- The GPU for sure. If your budget is not enough for a GTX970 at least get the 4GB version of the 960 for just a few more bucks, 2GB is not enough anymore. Or the R9 290 if it's around $250, that beats the GTX960.
- That SSD is fine, but I guess you're going to install some HDD. 2K16 itself takes 50GB, plus the OS, downloads,... WD Caviar Blue 1TB would be my choice if I had to buy one.

No need for a sound card unless you're using headphones and need an amp for them.

As for the OS, Win 10. You want DX12 support for the future.

Regards.

Win7 can also be upgraded to Win10 after installing all the updates

Thanks you guys...to summarize

+ Better CPU i7 Quad
+ a 4GB Video Card

Correct?

Re: New PC Configuration

Tue Nov 03, 2015 7:42 pm

An i5 4690K would be more than adequate, but no harm in an i7. I'd definitely recommend a 4 GB GPU, though. I'm extremely satisfied with my 4 GB GTX 970.

Umm... could you give me your budget? I think I could play around a bit and recommend something better. I also assume you're going to buy it in Italy.

Right now the config is around 1000€ I could go up to 1300€ no more....

Re: New PC Configuration

I have leaned towards getting a 970, but every time I do I remember that 500 mb of the 4 gb ram is slower and usually not used by games. I have continually passed on it. Especially now that you can find a 980 for $450 US dollars if you look for deals often enough.

Alright... There are several builds you could be interested in with that budget...
Prices are mostly from Amazon.de (inside EU you won't pay extra charges).

All of these are known good quality components, especially the essential ones like motherboard and PSU.

Windows 10 price is a placeholder. BTW chances are you don't need the "Pro" version.

First, mid-tower ATX build.

Thanks Dommy, so far those are prices for update...I won't use Amazon....I prefer shop near my house....they're also very good at assembly team....

ASUS GF STRIX-GTX960-DC2-4GD5 PCIE 3 90YV07Q1-M0NA00 271,65€
GIGABYTE GF PCIE3.0 GV-N970TTOC-4GD 370€

INTEL CORE I7-3770 3.4GHZ SKT1155 6MB CACHE BOXED 384€

So I think I can upgrade to 970 & i7.... (Y)

Re: New PC Configuration

As of now, I'd recommend going for R9 390 instead of GTX 970.

For gaming i7 is overkill and brings no real advantage (often less than 3% performance boost). i7 are useful for photo/video editing, compiling, etc.
i5-4690K is around 120€ more expensive than i5-4460 when you compare it and the performance boost in gaming is less than 10%.

Yeah but since I change PC not so often...could be I7 a good investment?

I also compile a lot ^_^

Re: New PC Configuration

That depends... I know about a lot of people still running on 2nd gen i5 and still being very relevant and in gaming a general work.

If you can make use of the extra threads and are willing to spend extra for it, then by all means. Though I'd recommend looking for 4th or even 6th gen i7 then...

+ No need to for gaming, but up to you and your budget. i5-4590 was a good choice.
+ About 4GB of VRAM... sure but the GPU must be good. There's a 4GB version of the G730 that's absolute garbage. So basically it'd be between: GTX960 4GB, GTX 970; R9 290, R9 380, R 390.

ASROCK LGA1150 H97 MATX H97M

It's the same model, but the micro-ATX version.

Asrock H97M Pro4

Although I prefer ATX. You could also go with:

http://www.tecnocomputer.it/asus-h97-pl ... 0eay5.html

I must say though, this website is really pricey. i7-4790 for 380€??? It's 315€ in Amazon.it (and 283€ in Amazon.ES). Same with the rest of components. I'd really consider buying things in Amazon and paying some local store for its assembly.

Careful... i7-3xxx is an old socket. It won't fit in the motherboard mentioned above and I wouldn't recommend you getting this old socket.

Made one within your maximum budget at cyberpowerpc.co.uk. http://www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk/saved/989640

Upgraded to a 980, liquid cooling, and an i7 6600k, and Win 8.1. I started with the i5, but the i7 has hyperthreading and an 8mb l3 cache. I like to think when building a cpu, that you are building it to last. You can save 100-400 if you go back to an i5 and 970, though. I also chose a quiet case like you did, but you could also change that to a cheaper one.

I also noticed you probably already have a monitor, you need to make sure that you have the inputs, cables or adapters to connect your new card to it.

Any recommended brand for 960 or 970 GPU? Is it true that 970 has memory problems....true?

MSI VGA NVIDIA 4GB DDR5 DVI-I/D HDMI DISPLAYPORT GTX 960 GAMING 4G 288€
ASUS STRIX-GTX960-DC2OC-4GD5 90YV07Q0-M0NA00 291€
ASUS TURBO-GTX970-OC-4GD5 408€
MSI VGA 4G GTX 970 4GD5T OC 412€

Is a GTX 960 4gb a real deal?

EDIT:
http://www.amazon.it/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1 ... %3Agtx+970

I could get a 970 GTX 4gb for 340€ so I would go for it but which one is better/more compatible?
