Yeah, if you review games for someone who actually got connections to distributors you can usually get a copy about a week earlier - it's more complicated over Steam, but it can be done.

I remember getting DiRT3 early to write a review - everything worked, we just had an agreement to not publish anything pre-release (DiRT3 has youtube integration).

It's a normal copy of the game, so yeah, you can play anything. I used to post a lot of pre-release videos (Ken North @ 2K forums), but lately I don't have much time to play so haven't bothered with that
