Cannot get Face Scan to work (unless it's dark)

45 minutes, in front of a goddamn window, and it kept losing track of my head.
I did try it in a dark room, with no light other than the light from the TV, back when I first got the game, because I figured it'd be better than waiting until I could get some daylight. It was: it worked pretty well and got me a completed face scan on the first attempt. Only "average" quality, though, so I thought giving it another go with more light - the TV is very temporarily in front of the window at the moment - would be a good idea.
Turns out, not so much. Why the hell does it tell me to have as much light as possible if it apparently only works in the dark?

If it's too bright on your face(from the monitor/tv turning white during the scan)it will wash out the details on your face making it harder to track your face. Brighten up the background behind you so the exposure of the camera is lowered and it can take faster pictures. You don't need anything but an average scan to get a resemblance.
