I'm mostly running auto plays which can get repetitive, so I pick them randomly from the list of primary scorers. Pick and rolls can be a nightmare, the defense reacts to them well. I guess I've never assisted on a pick and roll yet. Seperation is also hard.
I really feel your pain, i'm a PG on the Kings, playing Superstar/Sim because it is the supposed best simulation gameplay out of the box. I got some tips for you because just like you, i like to play team basketball/pass first as a PG who is just not good enough yet, and i recently figured some things out and we beat a good team like Suns who have a ton of great PG's who tested us very well.
1)
Put Defensive assist, boxout assist to 100 - i remember something about these settings explained from a couple years ago that controls AI in a certain way as well, so if u put it on 100 u are gonna get better help defense and more boxouts from AI.
Put shot contest on "always" because sometimes the cheese from CPU is so real and u will not have time to press contest, u will just have to be there and contest will be automatic. Also,
try to cut of the runs to the bucket DIAGONALLY, instead of just moving horizontally -
anticipate where they are going and get there first, then u will get a bump and the guessing game starts over again, and u might get the CPU to take a contested short range that rarely goes in in this game, as opposed to contested mid range.
2)Can't emphasize this enough -
you MUST help your team rebound. Very often AI will not box out properly and it is your job as a guard to come back and help them, but only when it is not the player you guard that is shooting. Just as soon as shot clock winds down, and the CPU player is about to take a bad/contested shot and u are sure he can't pass to the player u guard in time, run to the boards and help. When u rack up a couple boards either you will start rebounding like crazy or your teammates will not do a proper job and start out-rebounding the AI. I don't even have 1 rebound upgrade and i got close to a Rondo-esque triple double a lot of times.
This also will help ur fast breaking problem, cuz now u will start it and u can run at the defense.
3)
Play smart passes - this year, pick and roll passing isn't cheese and it will actually require ur teammate being open to thread the needle. I still struggle a bit at this, but i got better recently. Another tip -
use pick and FADE with ur best perimeter scorer when u need a good shot or need to get him going. A lot of times the D will either switch on him or he will be on an island ready to iso and score. I use this with Rudy Gay and he is by far my fav. teammate, he gets buckers and assists for me, and we win games.
4)
Put the play-calling on Auto (it works properly this year) learn the plays that work and use them when u need a good bucket - i have a shortlist of plays on the Kings that get Demarcus in good post position and Rudy in a good iso/slashing position that prove very successful. When coach calls a bad play, i switch it to either 2K smart play (hold left bumper) or call a play i like. This way, eventually you will be able to control the tempo of the play and cut out bad possessions.
5)
Take smart shots - i know, easier said than done, but really, shoot only when open, and when u have to force a shot, i suggest driving to the paint after a bit of dancing and trying to get fouled and put something up there. Kings really crush the boards so a lot of times even when i miss, Cousins and Thompson will get the O rebound and put if back up or get fouled.
I think these cover most of the things that i learned so far, so good luck out there!
