Well, upon close examination, the game is based on the dx9 - no tessellation on objects (head, ears, body etc.)

isn't it particularly difficult to know when tessellation isn't there without context?

Also keep in mind that even though the textures are pixelated when you zoom all the way in, at 1080p, the textures are extremely crisp and high quality. Really impressive stuff.

...Wait a minute, what if the game isn't based on DirectX at all?

EDIT: NBA2K is under 2K Games, the same publisher as the Borderlands, XCom and Civilization games. The latter two have been ported to OSX/Linux, and Borderlands: The Presequel is confirmed to be coming to OSX/Linux as well. You can't (at least out-of-the-box) have DirectX running in OSX/Linux, you need OpenGL. Without jumping shark, there is a more-than-zero chance that the NBA2K series will at least one day be on the Mac, too.

@Vlad2010 - Hopefully you are wrong. If it's based on DX9 at least it looks amazing, but hopefully it's based on DX11 and just doesn't utilize tessellation. Hopefully they just haven't implemented it in the demo/game used at Gamescom.

What in the world is tesselation.

Why would you assume the game uses DX9 because it doesn't utilize ONE DX11 feature? Don't forget tessellation doesn't run that well on AMD cards which are in PS4/X1 (or it's GPU is based on them).

It's a piece of technology, that can create nice 3D details. That said, i'm not sure why it would be used for NBA game, where we look at players from distance (most of the time). When you consider resource cost vs visual improvement, I think tessellation gets sidelined.

LOL this is tech demo screen, but yeah, it has to be used with severe moderation, otherwise you'll get road which looks like spike strip.

Yeah, but tessellation - the main feature of dx11 – everything else is just no such significant improvements (DoF, lighting, anti-aliasing types, etc.) from DX9 (i think so)
Meanwhile, if really NBA2K15 based on dx9 - it's even better, the system requirements would be less.

Sorry, but I don't see this happening - dx9 is basically dead for modern games.
There's not a single reason to have dx9 support, since cards that does not support dx10/11 are most probably too weak to run the game.

This is a jump in quality and jump in requirements. Look at games like Battlefield 4, new Wolfenstein... AFAIK only Ubisoft still supports dx9 consistently and that's not going to last long since they're going to release bunch of new games with new engines.

The game needs to use DirectX 11 to take advantage of multi threaded PC's. DX9-10 can do it but not nearly as well. They would also need it to use shader model 5.0. I would be very surprised if NBA 2K15 was not a DirectX 11 game. By the way Fifa 15 is a DirectX 11 game.

DirectX 12 will be coming out next year. Video cards with the Fermi(450 I think) architecture or newer will be supported. It's supposed to have huge performance and power efficiency gains over DirectX 11.

I would be astounded if NBA 2K15 supports DX9.
Though I am not certain, I pretty confident that NBA 2K14 (on PS4/XBO) utilized graphical features that are only present in PC API(s) DirectX 11 and OpenGL X.X (I don't know OpenGL well).
It's purely wishful thinking that one would hope that they will port their DX11 code to DX9, AND even if they did, DX9 hardware can't handle the graphical load that will be found in NBA 2K15.

Anyway by Black Friday/Cyber Monday (for us Americans) one will be able to find a $150 (possible less) GPU that will run NBA 2K15 maxed out in its full glory.
I have already seen AMD R9 280X going for $200~ and that GPU will own NBA 2K15.

Or you can just get a second mortgage on your house and buy a GTX Titan Z. :mrt:
