1-3-1 zone gone?

I read online that the devs got rid of it because it was overpowered online AND NBA teams don't use it. Also got rid of the charge cheese that I have been guilty of too 
Why was 1-3-1 so effective and how do you defeat it? Was it because the cpu defense recovered too quickly (compared to real life) and therefore there was no reward-penalty (reward is to stop drives into the lane, penalty should be that you leave the guy wide open for a jump shot) for the zone defense?
