JSGME: Mix & Match Mods Without Keeping Backups Manually

Fri Oct 04, 2013 5:00 pm

I copied Leftos thread from last year. The instructions are for NBA 2K12 but the exact same things apply this year as well.
Leftos wrote:DISCLAIMER: This was copied verbatim from the post I did last year for NBA 2K12. Exactly the same things apply.

A common issue modders creating (and users using) Total Conversions encounter, is the inability to keep the original game and the total conversion installed without having to copy the entire game folder to another place, or keeping manual backups of any files the mod replaces.

Another common issue for users, is downloading a mod and installing it, only to find out they didn't like it, but not having kept a backup, they have to dig up their original disc to find the original file, or download another mod.

The solution to all this is JSGME. JSGME, or Generic Mod Enabler, is a mod manager that works with any game. You install it to the game's installation directory, and put any new mod you want to try in a subfolder within a Mods folder. JSGME will detect the mods in that folder on start-up, and allow you to enable any of them.

It automatically keeps backups of your original files and restores them when you disable the mod. It also detects if a mod you're about to enable will conflict with another enabled mod. It can also keep mod profiles that remember which mods you want enabled for each profile (e.g. a Classic profile, in which you'll have classic courts, a classic scoreboard, classic jerseys, etc).

You can download it here: http://www.gamefront.com/files/20963192/jsgme_setup_exe
or here

Video Tutorial

Tutorial
1. Install it to your NBA 2K12 installation folder.
2. You'll find a MODS subfolder created inside now.
3. For every mod you want to be able to enable and disable, create a subfolder inside the MODS folder, with the name of the mod. For example, if you want to be able to switch between the TNT and NBA TV scoreboards, create two folders like so:
...\NBA 2K12\MODS\TNT Scoreboard
...\NBA 2K12\MODS\NBA TV Scoreboard
4. Extract the files of each mod into those subfolders, not into your installation path directly.
5. The mods will show up on JSGME, and you can enable/disable them.

Here are some screenshots to help you:

Where are the backup files kept?

mucusfriend, JSGME makes backups automatically and stores them in the, wait for it, !BACKUP folder. The files get renamed. The enabled mod name gets appended to the original name. You should disable the mod through the interface otherwise you'll have to rename the files and copy them to your root NBA 2K folder.

I understand how the programme works but thanks anyway. (Y) Problem is I have no !BACKUP in my game or saves folder. It must be somewhere because files are restored fine when switching mods, I would just like to know where they are.

Check your Generic Mod Enabler folder if it's not in your NBA 2K14 folder. There are two ways to create shortcuts for JSGME. The 'target' and 'start in' folders in the shortcut properties can be different depending on how you create the shortcut.

I have no such folder either. JSGME.exe is in my game folder. Is there some documentation I can read? I do not remember how I installed it and there are no options to modify it now.

mucusfriend, these are the JSGME files that should be included in your game folder by default.

There are also two hidden files inside the MODS folder as seen here

Backups are kept in the "!BACKUP" folder.
Note that you should have "Show hidden files" enabled in your folder settings for them to be visible!

I still can't get this to work. I installed a CF into the MODS folder and it didn't even recognize it.

Uncle Drew,
the CF should be in a folder within the MODS folder such as 'cyberfaces'. You may need to create this folder and then copy the pngXXXX.iff file(s) to that folder. The file location should be similar to this: Z:\NBA 2K14\MODS\cyberfaces. You can have individual subfolders for stadiums(floors and dornas), uniforms, balls, graphic effects(ENB), portraits, title pages and different mods(NCAA, UBR).

I have a problem. I have the DD version of NBA2K14 from Amazon. I noticed in my directory, I have 2 folders. One is program files(X86) and the other is program files (X86) steam. There are files in both folders, so I transferred the files from (X86) steam to the program files (X86) folder. I loaded the game, and saw a different title page with UBR ultimate roster instead of the default Lebron startup which I didn't have originally, as well as the music. I want it back as it was. Then I start to play and it kicks me back to the steam startup page. My question is are there suppose to be 2 folders for the game files? I thought I was doing the right thing by combining them to one folder. I re-installed the game, and it works, but everything went back to the default settings when the game came out. the mods I had in the game are gone, but it did save my roster files, UBR files, association and settings. So I tried to re- install courts, CF's, jerseys etc... but they don't show up in the game now. Everything was good until I combined folders. Would appreciate any help.

Just a little FYI:

If you have a mod folder with Chinese characters in it (and potentially other language characters, idk), there will be a bug with JGSME.

After you enable the mod, you cannot disable it. I think this is because JGSME can't recognize those characters, and instead places question marks where they were when you enable the mod. However, this is different than the log file and Windows itself will not let you put ??? in the file or folder name.

So instead, just delete the whole folder name and type it yourself.

question about where the roster files that normally go into the Saves folder?? just continue to put them in there or put Jsgme in there??

They still go in "Saves" folder, you load them ingame, so no point in JSGME there!?
