Just a reminder, anything under 100 MB can be uploaded directly to our Downloads section for safekeeping; we don't delete files unless there's an issue with them, or the author requests it. We can (and have) lost great updates that were hosted externally, so we're all for preserving files as much as we can. Any questions about our upload facilities, just let me know.

GritterAndGrinder wrote:And quite frankly this whole nonsense has pissed me off quite a bit. If files are made free to begin with, who gives a damn about giving credit for them? I don't make these for the glory and honor of a bunch of computer gaming junkies like myself, who will never know my real name nor see my face. I make them so there's more content out there for people to enjoy even more the game we all love. Honestly don't care who's work went into UBR. I like the mod, so i play it. that's all i know. If anyone wants to take my roster and make changes to it and post it, I couldn't care less if you credit me. I just want to post it so maybe someone will get enjoyment from playing it or a later incarnation of it. ok?

I don't want to derail the thread, but you ask a fair question and I do believe in answering that question honestly whenever it comes up is in the best interest of the community.
Since the early days of our patching community, giving credit and asking permission to re-use or modify someone else's work has just been the done thing, in order to keep things friendly, respectful, and so on. It's become a contentious issue at times, because some people have insisted on re-releasing other people's work without asking, or at the very least, mentioning who and where it came from. Although there's no legal leg to stand on - modding is something that Visual Concepts or EA Sports could shut down with a cease-and-desist, if they wanted to (but fortunately they don't seem to want to) - it instead comes down to a self-regulating code of honour and etiquette.
It's disheartening to see something you've spent a lot of time on re-released by someone else, especially when they're directly or indirectly claiming it as their own work, without any acknowledgement. There is some ego involved in that, of course - as someone who was reluctant to let other patchers use my NBA Live rosters as a base for years, I'll freely admit that - but it remains an understandable position, especially in cases where no courtesy is shown to the original author.
Note that I'm not saying you're doing that, in fact you're doing quite the opposite and taking a respectful approach with everything. I'm just trying to explain why it's been an issue for us in the past, and why it's a sensitive matter for some modders.
We have been encouraging people to adopt a more open source approach and share their work, but it's a big philosophical shift and it's not something that we can (or intend to) enforce as a rule. The situation with UBR obviously works out quite well, as most people have the assets pre-installed, saving everyone time and multiple big downloads. It's one of those things where we'll make our recommendations, recognise everyone's right to decline permission, and make sure that credit is given when it's due and whenever possible (as patchers do leave the community and are sometimes difficult to get a hold of, years later), but everything is handled on a case-by-case basis, because some people are more comfortable with their work being redistributed than others. As such, we support both stances, because people do have different feelings about the matter and very valid reasons for feeling the way that they do.
Anyway, I hope that clears a few things up. I'm certainly happy to answer any further questions and provide clarification if need be. Like I said, it's been a bit of a touchy issue through the years, with certain incidents shaping our respective feelings toward the situation.
Thank you for that explanation. I understand the stance that UBR takes, I just personally don't share it. If anyone ever wanted to use my work, I wouldnt care if I was credited. It's just my personal feelings toward my work and why i do it. Like I said, I understand why one would not want their work being passed off as someone elses, and realize there are people out there that go further and not only dont credit the original creator but actually claim outright that it is all their original work. That being said, the thing that really pissed me off was that i specifically said in my original post that the mod included a roster, settings, and jukebox all of my own design and a ball, which i didnt know who to credit for, but made a point to say it was not mine to take credit for. And with all of that, and me saying that you needed to already have UBR downloaded, i felt like i was straightup accused of doing something i didnt do, and said i wasnt doing, and if time had been taken to read my original post, the discussion that took place, overshadowing the real topic of the thread, would have never come about. Quite frankly it made no sense for me to upload 30 gigs of data, when most everyone already has it, anyways. It just greatly annoyed me that peopl couldnt just read and use common sense to realize I was in no way passing off others' work as my own.
For the record, my long response was directed solely towards Maestrio and not you. I never once typed the word "stealing" because, I agree, that's a ridiculous statement for anyone to make, because technically every modder is "stealing" from 2K when they make their own adjustments to the files. I actually believe the UBR team has helped to "break the mold" of individual patching and has made it more into a team/community effort - there are some specific reasons why I don't like large portions of the UBR files being stuffed into additional download packages (which I thought you were possibly thinking about doing) that I'll type out and explain at the end of this post.
I also never once intended for YOU to get any heat, only to understand that it would make the most sense to let the UBR be a stand alone download that should be downloaded in addition to whatever you were creating. If it came across differently to you then I apologize, the main source of my frustration was with the other poster whom has been a thorn in my side for many months now posting inappropriate and untrue comments. I obviously saw that you mentioned the UBR in your original post, but the reason for me typing my first post to you was because you made it seem like you had a "large download" you needed to upload and I assumed that meant using large portions of files from the UBR (since roster files and settings files are extremely small). I'm all about people contributing or enhancing the UBR experience. The main thing is I don't want tons of people messaging me about issues or problems they have that are associated with other UBR-related projects that I have no knowledge of (which happens quite frequently) because then I end up wasting my own time trying to figure out what the hell it is they are even talking about. I also don't like multiple people hosting large amounts of UBR files because they get updated constantly and I don't want older versions of download links out there. Again, all of this is moot because you're doing it the right way by having people download UBR first, then download your creation - I just wanted to be clear for anyone in the future, and I wanted you to know that the main source of my frustration did not come from you or your project.
This is the last comment I'll be making in your thread in regards to this topic. Any others I make will be about your actual project!
thanks for clearing that up. i now understand why you would think i was possibly releasing ubr files considering it took me a while to post the download. and yeah, that guy did appear to be a troll.

I disagree. They seem like fair ratings to me. Not everyone can be in the 90's. If i'm not mistaken, i believe it's a very similar ratio to the official 2k rosters as far as how many 90's, 80's, 70's and so on.

Also with my mod, conventional ratings fly out the window. The sliders have been messed with so much and tweaked for gameplay with the UBR rosters, so the ratings being alittle low wont matter in Jam mode.

So some ideas I've been bouncing around about this roster mod. anyone that's following this, let me know what you think:
first, replacing the street ballers with an All-Time Jammers (basically a team loaded with the best dunkers from 93-95)
also adding the 96 grizz and raptors, so theres a mid-nineties team for each to play as, kinda like a NBA Jam Ad-on or DLC if you will. as if the original makers of NBA Jam released a special ad-on pack for these teams, since the original series ended in 95. Also it'd be fare to pay homage to NBA Hangtime, which is the rightful successor to NBA Jam
lastly, upgrade the players on the Secret Players team. right now, they're kinda how one would expect. Stretch isn't much better than he was in the NBA Street game, the globetrotters on the team are only just all-star calibur, and anyone that doesnt actually play basketball (e.g. will smith) is just midling in level. Also might be funny to make Scalabrine really good, since he's "the best player to ever play in the NBA" because right now they're pretty good, but being the special team, maybe they should be even better. like an old-school videogame boss. i know in the original NBA Jam, it never told you what their ratings were, but the kinda talk around the table was using any one of them was cheating cause they were like a secret weapon against any of your friends who didn't know about the cheat codes.
I had one more in the chamber but forgot what it was, there could be more to come. if anyone has anymore, let me know. if i get enough that everyone kinda wants, i'll make V2.
edit: remembered what the last thing was and did all 4 things. NBA Jam V2 coming in just a few minutes!
Mon Jun 01, 2015 2:58 pm
Version 2 is now out!
Changes:
added 96 grizz and 96 raptors
deleted Street Ballerz; replaced with Legendary Jammers, a team of the best dunkers of the NBA Jam era
Upgraded the Secret Players so they're a true "cheat code" team. (Brian Scalabrine 89 Overall!)
Upgraded Spud Webb dunking ability to 99, cause this is NBA Jam and the man deserves to have immortal dunking ability.
Changed Grizzlies and Raptors courts to '96 floors
i know it's not a massive update, but i feel it'll greatly improve the mod. Let me know what you think.
Download it here from MediaFire!(also changed file format to a .zip so you dont have to have winrar to open it. note: if you already have V1 OMEGA, you dont have to put the ball, settings, or juke box in there again. they haven't changed. just the roster.)
Edit: I just realized that the Legendary Jammers are called the "Jammers Legendary" on accident. If I make a V3, this will get fixed, but for now, it'll have to be a minor annoyance. besides, in most of the menus, it puts the team name before the city. so it'll actually say "Legendary Jammers" if you read it how they have to stacked.

You should put the dunk rating to 100 to all of them and also the 3s. Also, Dunk in Traffic Frequency to 100 and Success to 92.
PS: Add 01-02 Lakers, 04-05 Lakers, 08-09 Celtics and Lakers.

I have dunking in the sliders tone up a bit so any big player that just has like 50 in dunks can now posterize people and jump frim the line, the reason i didnt make it any better is because i put verticle in thr sliders at 99 so i wanted to make sure short white guys still couldnt dunk, just like in NBA Jam. Also 3s are alittle easier but one big thing i got from playing NBA Jam on my SEGA was that bigmen rarely made them and if it's contested, it'll be hard to make, but there would be plenty of offensive rebounds, so i amped up those. So your 3 wont be drained every time, but you'll likely get another shot. Lastly, i believe dunk in traffic tendancy IS all the way up in the sliders.
In terms of adding those teams, i already have an 03 lakers that is clearly the best team out of the 03s to play with. And i'd rather not add the 09 teams. The focus of the mod is supposed to be on the 93-96 seasons. The 15 season is in there because we'd want to see how they stack up against the classic Jam teams and also see our current favorites in a Jam style gameplay. The ABA teams are there cause it felt a shame to leave them out of a game that's all about dunking, flashiness, and playing dirty. The ABA basically was NBA Jam incarnate. The 03 teams are there just cause they make the bridge between the 90s and where we are now. Last season with MJ; last season without King James. Also i grew up playing NBA live 03. So it carries a bit of nostagic value for me, personally. That's why there arent any other recent teams. The 15 and 03 are there for nostalia and novelty. Thr focus is on the 93-96.
Edit: dunk i.t. Success is where it should be i believe. Ive rarely had one not go in unless directly blocked. Occasionally one will be blocked or just not go in, but it's the same in NBA Jam. Feel free o shoot back at me an arguement for thr edits/aditions. Im all ears. I just wanted to provide you with my reasoning behind the way i have it so you can build an arguement from that.

So my roommate came to town and beat me at my own mod 3 times in a row last night. Granted, he did have 93 jordan on his team, but both our teams were stacked. I can't figure out how he gets so many steals though. it's like he's magic or something. if i could hold onto the ball more, i'd beat him, cause i shoot a higher percentage. but i cant keep him from stealing it sometimes. help guys. it's my own freakin mod and i'm getting my ass handed to me.
Thu Jun 04, 2015 11:06 pm
You can try tweaking the players' ratings and the sliders' steal success

i will be releasing a version 3 after the draft and version 4 once free agency settles down with minor updates to version 4 as big trades take place going into next season. my question for you guys is what would you like to see in version 3 and 4? slider changes, more teams, etc. if you want a change to the sliders, please give reasoning as to how it'll help make this mod more like NBA Jam's gameplay. it'd also help if you went ahead and tested your ideas before suggesting, so i don't have to do as much extensive testing myself to see if it improves gameplay while keeping the cpu difficult enough to make the game exciting. when suggesting teams, bare in mind this is an NBA Jam mod, not a base roster, so i'm mostly looking for teams relevant to that series or created teams that can add alittle flare (eg. the secret players and the legendary jammers). I might be looking to take out some 2003 teams that aren't worth having and are basically terrible and replace them with some other teams from different years, but as stated before, I don't want to go overboard and turn this into UBR. Also, i realize that some teams don't have a single year in my mod where they're really any good, so i might be adding a year for each of those teams where they are actually good. I'm probably going to add the 85 or 86 lakers and celtics as kind of an ode to other classic nba games like the "VS Bird" series. that way we'll have bird, the doctor, magic, and mj all on there. that's the main thing i wanted to get out there, asking you guys for any suggestions on version 3 before the draft swings around. the second thing is i need help. anyone with modding experience and knows what's wrong with the crowds for the aba teams, pm me. also if someone can figure out how to get this mod running in season mode, that would be amazing. welp. that's all i got. thanks to anyone who's followed this thread and helped me out making my dream mod a reality.
P.S. thanks for the suggestions you've already made, KP. even the one's i shot down earlier. i'll be taking another look at them when making V3. you've been a great help with all of this.

No problem man, just trying to help
Mon Jun 08, 2015 2:21 pm
Ok. did some looking through various rosters and here's a list of teams being removed from 2003 and a list of teams being added to V3
03 teams being swapped out for different years:
pistons replaced with 04
suns r/w 05
spurs r/w 04
bucks r/w 01
denver r/w 09
raptors r/w 04
03 teams being straight-up deleted
heat
cavs
bulls
jazz
knicks
warriors
1 additional 00's team:
08 big three celtics
4 teams being added from 86 and 90:
86 celtics
86 lakers
86 hawks (because this is NBA Jam and they had the two greatest dunkers of the 80s on that team)
90 bad boys pistons (the game is whack-a-player style)
3 "what if" teams being added:
04 melo pistons
01 duncan magic
04 kidd spurs
so basically it'll be changing from just 03 to a variety of 2000's teams with a focus on 03. some what if teams from the 2000's will be added. 86 lakers and celtics to pay homage to the "VS Bird" series which never had a Magic VS Bird installment, but should have. and the 86 hawks and 90 pistons added because they embody the two main features of NBA Jam gameplay: dunking and hitting people.
let me know what you guys think of the upcoming changes and if there are any others you'd like to be made.

I was literally 2 teams away from having all of these changes done and got an infinite " '''' is not a valid integer " messages that i couldnt get rid off when i tried to clone just 20 players to create spots for the teams. it wouldnt let me save and i had to exit out. all that progress gone. 2 hours of my life that i'll never get back. was gonna release it as version 2.5, but i guess i'll just wait now. im too depressed to start again.

You should've just copied it to an excel document to make a backup or something.
That error popups when the data that you're trying to copy and paste doesn't match the pre-loaded data.
Think of it this way:
If your table has 14 columns and you want to overwrite 14 of those, you copy and paste the 14 columns of data that you have, right?
But if you saw the "" is not a valid integer""" shit, then you may be trying to paste 15 columns of data instead of 14.

i was just cloning 20 players to create more slots to paste players into, something i've done 100 times. i dont know what went wack. i had enough memory left in the roster. i'll probably get bored tonight and give it another go, but i had redone 12 teams by that point and im back down to plain ol version 2.
and i wouldve just transfered all the cells over to my other copy of version two, but the messages were as i said, infinite and wouldnt go away and wouldnt let me touch red mc. i had to go to task manager to close out.
