Did they make it official to add nba patch on the back of the jerseys?

Those gold patches are kinda ugly and even in close shots its hard to tell what it is unless you know. I thought it was the jersey size until I read a story on it lol
Having worked for NBA shop.com this really just seems like "how can we get people to buy a new jersey if they already have one, I know well add a new patch." Because now even if a team doesnt redesign their jersey for next season to completionists, superfans, and people with too much money to blow they now have a "new" jersey to buy.
