Computer shuts down during game

Postby dim-3D on Tue Nov 12, 2013 5:01 am

I'm not sure if this is the right thread for this but i don't know if there is a thread for this (i'd like to ask for your patience at that point since english is not my main language and my describions may be a bit confusing... i hope not)

Bug description: My pc thurns off after i play the game for a few minutes. The last days 4 times this thing happend (3 in the row), at first I had no problem, i played about 20-25 game everything was ok and then it started doing this thing. This just happend over the last 3 days. At first i thought something is wrong with my pc. But after a lot of testing everything seems ok. The only time my pc turns off is when i play this game. Sometimes after 15 minutes sometimes after 35-40 minutes. No error messages appear. When i turn on my pc again everything seems fine.

Platform (PC/X360/PS3): PC

Game Mode: .

Specific steps to reproduce the bug; I have this program geforce experience which makes a list with all the games stored in your pc and improve them in a way. While 2k13 and other games i have is on the list 2k14 is left outside for some reason like it doen't exist. I found out about this just today.I have no idea why this is happening. I tried install the game all over again nothing changed. No problems with drivers or system requirements and everything seems ok with my hardware.

Check your temperatures. A PC shutting down randomly during a game usually means the cpu shut off to protect the peripherals from being damaged due to excess heat.

checked!! eveything is been checked again and again each time the pc shut down during a game, all temperatures are fine. I even went to the advanced settings in the system in the "startup and recovery" section and I checked out the "automatically restart" options. Pc is still shuting down. I play FIFA 14 and had no problem with this game. The problem occurs only with 2k14 for some reason.

I split the topic because it most likely isn't a game bug even though you only get the problem with 2k14.

Check your event viewer in Windows and look for the unexpected shutdown. You might have to duplicate the issue so you can find the error easier. Post back what you find.

Just as i was posting again in the old thread. I put my new post here

ok i just found out this thing

http://www.geforce.co.uk/geforce-experience/supported-games

My graphics card is a Geforce GT 430 and the last drivers I installed had this geforce-experience program along that i mentioned in my previous post (i didn't knew about it). In the above link is a list of the suported games and 2k14 isn't on it (but they have 2k13). Is this mean that I have to wait untill they release new drivers so i can play the game without having my pc shouting down????

As you all understand i'm not a big gamer I only play few sport games now and then and never before had to face something like this.

Today I played again 2k13 without any problem at all.

------------

As for the event viewer i already did that but to post the results it's not easy. You see I have everything in... greek. I can post a picture were at the bottom you can see the details in english if that is any help

Anyway i went to the windows support page for a solution for it, but that didn't help either.

Try that.
If it doesn't work, disable speed step in your bios if you have an Intel processor.
If that doesn't work it could be any piece of hardware in your cpu. Run checks on your hard drive, then your memory. You may have to post at a tech site to get this fixed.

2K14 isn't listed in GeForce Experience because they don't have (questionable) profiles for it yet. 2K13's didn't show up for a while either. Plus those profiles are just for "optimizing" the settings based on your specs, the game will run the same with/without them. You can safely rule that out as the problem.

This is where at end up.. only this site appears in greek language for me thats why i didn't post it here. I didn't know how it will appear here. Anyway a guess i have to ask for tech support. thanks anyway.

I had a very wild guess and i'm just throwing it in here in case anyone else found something similar or had any kind of trouble. It occurs to me that my pc shuts down only when i played games at 12 minutes periods. In 2k13 in which i still have no problem at all, i never played a 12 minutes period only 10 minutes. When i started playing this game i had 6 minutes periods then 10 minutes and after that i went to 12 minutes period. All 4 times my pc shut down was at 12 minutes periods as i can recall (i'm 99% certain about that). I never had problem with mycareer only with regular games.

Is anyone else playing with 12 minutes periods (not in my career) facing any kind of problem at all??? (only pc verion obviously). I know is a very wild guess but for the moment thats all I got. At one point i'm going to try it again with 10 minutes periods but right now i'm a little afraid since the last time my pc shut down 'cause of the game I couln't open it again for the next 2-3 minutes.

If you have to wait a few minutes before you can turn your pc on, that is definitely a hardware issue. 2k14 is just exposing it in your system.

when you say shut down you mean like a blue screen of death ? or it goes back on windows ?

if it goes back on windows, have you downloaded a new scoreboard lately ? if yes, then go back to the original one (had same issue) .
if your computer reboot .. then I have no idea sorry

That was one of my first thoughts but why the same thing didn't happen in games like FIFA 14 or 2k13 (still play those games with no problem at all) which have the same system req. or even when i'm not playing any game at all and just performe something else on my pc?? My pc never shut down like this before.

Thing is... I tested this theory. I played 2 games in a row with 6 minutes periods. Guess what, my pc didn't shut down. I'm going to play some 10 minutes games now to test again.

I can tell you it has nothing to do with quarter length even if playing longer quarter lengths exposes the problem. This error is a wide bug in Win7 and can be a hardware problem, application conflict, driver conflict, or just about anything. There is no definitive fix, only troubleshooting steps that can be taken to try and isolate the issue. You may need to seek support at Microsoft or other tech-help forums.

Perform a clean startup using the steps detailed at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796

Play a 12 minute game of 2K14 and see if your cpu shuts down.

To tell you the truth I just played 2 more games with 10 minutes quarters and had no problem at all (one of them was epic by the way I was loosing by 18 by the end of the 3rd, returned and lost in overtime by 4, really glorious match). For the moment i'll just leave like that (maybe i had the same thing with 2k13 and never found out since i never played 12 minutes quarter in that game). Maybe if i find someone with more knowledge I put him on the task. Expept if that bug your talking about starts messing with other things too. So far I had no problem at all expept when i play the long quarters at 2k14. Thanks for the tip though and all the help I really appreciate it.
