What to really expect from the Next Gen version?

Postby ChrisCP3Paul on Thu Sep 26, 2013 6:15 am

I'm really curious because 2K has been sooooo quiet about what they're bringing to the next gen table. Now this could be either because they're about to blow our minds, or because they got nothing to show for it so are keeping a low profile. EA sports has a new Ignite engine they're bringing.

What do you guys think we should expect realistically ?
I mean I know what we and the world deserve, it's finally a fresh new engine for a new era of gaming, and not a recycled version of the current one that they've been using since the PS2 and Xbox days. It's obvious that this current engine has been polished to the point of being a diamond and it really showed in 2K13, but now there is not much more they could do to upgrade it.
I really have a feeling that 2K is just gonna use the same base engine and spice up the visuals so on the new gen consoles it can finally to look like how it does currently on our PC's, in 1080p @ 60fps with better textures, etc.... and since the PC userbase for 2K is very small, most of the 2K world has only played the game on console and never seen it maxed out on PC, so they would be easily impressed just by these few simple features that us PC guys have been enjoying for years now.
When my little brothers when they come over to my house and play the game on my PC, they say it makes them not even wanna play the game on their PS3's back home, that's how much better it looks and feels. This is what I'm talking about exactly, it's something 2K easily get away with because they're trying to impress the console guys which isn't that hard. I think this first year of competition with EA coming out, I think is more of a testing the water type of thing for 2K, they're holding out to see how they're gonna play it.
I think this is a throw away year for them as you can tell by the early reviews it doesn't seem much has changed from 2K13, I think they're just sitting there waiting to see how EA plays it, and after that they will decide whether to go full in for next year or just keep at the same pace as long as they could.

anyway thanks for reading, went a bit longer than I thought, but what are your guys' general feelings on this issue

Its normal marketing behavior, first premiere for current gen, believe me, after 1 october, all 2k devs will start talking about next gen.
What i expect. I expect higher resolution for textures, no sliding over the floor, really new animations, mean more natural.

From snippets here and there, it doesn't sound like they're just porting the current gen version over and sprucing it up with better textures. After the dust settles on the current gen launch, we'll definitely be hearing and seeing more of next gen.

all i can see is a new engine... if it's not, then people are going to be disappointed because it will simply just be a graphical and presentational update. which of course teenagers would go crazy over because that's all they seem to complain about when they comment on cg 2k14.

I didn't misunderstand you. I'm just referring to anyone and everyone who believes next-gen is a coat of fluff with high resolution cherries on top.

Leftos, I know u cant talk about nextgen for now but can u compare this overall technical-gameplay improvement to something? for example nba live 08 and nba 2k9? I got this feel that it will be above this, it will be something bigger. We just want to know the scale, without details.
edit: now i saw your avatar description...hahaha very funny

I believe that the Next Gen version will have a new physics engine. I rewatched the next gen trailer, slow-moed it and saw that the ball does not float on the player's hands. I saw great finger locomotion on Lebron's jumpshot and how each individual fingers interact on the ball upon the release.

On the graphical update, great shadowing on the jersey and on the players body (SSAO), Horizon Based Ambient Occlusion (HBAO) shadowing which I saw on the backcourt, some LED 2kLogo on it and it has great looking shot clock too, Crowd textures looked better, Skin Lighting feels more natural and you can see that on Kobe's sweaty bald head. Shoe texture was crisp and the soles of it :D Great calf and quads definition. Jersey's still floats but is barely noticeable since it's only some mm differential between the body? The rim looks cool. Ball texture is fine with contrast to NBA live 14's ball texture which is crazy accurate.

One more thing, I have a feeling that NG 2k14's dribbling animations or whatever you want to call it, will be a MILE AWAY BETTER than CG 2k14.

Lastly, that was still PRE-ALPHA stage. And it felt so different and fluid. I can't wait to see some NG Gameplay. Man I wish I could develop a game like that after i finish my GameDev Degree.

Next-Gen 2K = super fluid realistic gameplay with suped up graphics. Mike Wang seems super excited about it so yeah. Leftos, do you ever come into contact with the graphics department? They need to step their game up on next-gen in terms of stadium/courts accuracy imo.

P.S. please please please use some sort of mathematical technique (e.g. bezier) to do the court lines instead of mesh.

You heard it here first folks, next gen 2K14 is even worse looking than the current gen versions AND has fewer features.

I hope 2K comes out with something new and fresh to get rid of these problems that have plagued the game for many years, we all know what they are I'm not gonna list them... but yea I'm fully expecting just a graphical update for the most part, no brand new physics engine or anything like that.... I believe that because I think 2K believes it can still beat Live even with what they currently have, without having to build a new engine from the ground up....

A lot of game teams are building new engines for this new generation of consoles rightfully so, even Call of Duty guys as bulletproof as their game is, went with a fresh new engine, so those studios still trying to hold onto the past long as they can, thinking 720p @ 30fps is gonna cut it in 2014, I hope they get reality checked hard...

I know one thing for sure though, I haven't been this excited in many years as I am right now with this upcoming holiday season, new consoles, new generation, new games, a lot of stuff to be excited about even if you're a casual gamer like myself

hope that they fix the number alignment on the jerseys. Heat jersey numbers on the front is still wrong in the preview.
