Titlescreen Editing | Photoshop Problem

Hey NLSC,
I was editing " titlepage.iff " and like I extracted all the .dds files and like when I wanted to edit LeBron's face by coloring the Alpha 1 black, it didn't allow me to. It said I needed to convert it to a 8/16 bit ? How do I fix it and how do I convert it to what it is telling me to to allow me to edit the Alpha 1.
Here's what I meant ( The magic wand thing isn't necessary. I just used it randomly just to show you guys that I couldn't touch the Alpha 1. It also works for other tools. I couldn't edit the Alpha 1):
