8 teams played at Trials. They played a 7 game round robin, everybody playing everybody else once.
Unfortunatly Bill Walton the best college basketball player declined to participate.
The Soviet Russians knew without Walton playing for the US Olympic basketball team they will have a chance to go for Gold in Munich.

The Soviet Union won the most gold and overall medals in the 1972 Summer Olympics. And yes, without Bill Walton playing for the US Olympic team the Soviet Russians also won Gold in a controversial basketball finals game.
With the ending mired in controversy, the Soviet Union defeated Team USA by one point, marking the latter's first ever loss in the event.
The event was overshadowed by the Munich massacre in the second week, in which 11 Israeli athletes and coaches and a West German police officer at the Olympic Village were killed by the Palestinian militant organisation Black September.
