Custom Jersey Help

I am trying to make my own high school jerseys since I just graduated and loved the jerseys. This includes the team name across it and nice colors. So my question is to do this would I just get any jersey that I think I wont use and put it thru the green textures with gimp and edit it. I am honestly lost with this and I was just thinking of paying paypal for this to someone but I think thats against the rules.
