Were you around for 2K9 when the game required Steam and everyone threw a shit fit about the "spyware" they have to run to play the game?

No, I wasn't. But I wasn't talking about 2K going "no retail, just Steam". I was suggesting they went with just Steam for Digital Distribution, plus the usual Retail. That way you only have to communicate with one DD, and have no reason to delay releases or patches.

2K9 wasn't "no retail, just Steam." It was retail only, but required Steam. There was no DD option.

Shipments to Argentina are insane, I will end up paying around USD 140 for the game (game + shipment + import taxs + etc...already checked in a couple sites) and I always have the risk it ends stuck in custom due to bureaucracy here...retail version of the game usually gets to stores a month or so after release.

Steam or other DDs like EA Origins are usually the best option here (for any game not just NBA 2k) unless you wanna spend 2x money or wait for months to get a retail disc.

But at last its just minor complaints. If you offer the possibility of a full-support, on-time release, that can compete with consoles (regarding 2K support in patches and things like that), I think the price of keeping Steam open (which I don't understand what's the fuss about it, as it's just a background program that doesn't use much memory and doesn't have much popups, only once a day, when you close a game I think) is a fair price, don't you think?

Totally. I play all my games through Steam right now, my library has around 80 games. I won't buy a box never again.

Again, they could have a completely separate no-Steam retail version, and a Steam version to satisfy both crowds, and not have to deal with all these DDs. Simple as that.

Although the Steam "spyware", if it were obligatory, it could help in other areas, such as help us find friends to play against online, were 2K to use it like they're using the Xbox Live friends and whatever Playstation has. Not that 2K isn't able to allow us to have friends lists based on everyone's My2K account, but they're not bothered.

I'd prefer they just Steamworks the bitch, but I was relating how people here freaked out over Steam four years ago.

Yup it has....before that the options here were a) pay unhealthly ammounts of $$$ for a game b) wait months for the retail game to get here (if it ever did) c) pirate it.
It was a madman dream hoping to play Skyrim, Assassins Creed, etc on its release day and paying the same an US/European guy did.
Actually accoding to lots of companies (Valve, Ubisoft, EA, Bioware, etc..) piracy in South America dropped enormously after Steam became massive.

Don't get me wrong...I will buy the game and If I have no other choice I will wait the 2 weeks to get the game, but for one guy that waits for it probably 3 won't and will get a pirate copy....that's why I think is stupid to do a retail release before a DD

I've decided to do the irrational thing. Buy a copy for my PS3 and wait till 10/16 for DD. Like many others, I refuse to buy a box/disc for my PC. I think this will allow me to do a good compare and contrast of the console vs. PC.

Valve has explicitly said this in regards to Russia, which is one of the largest pirate markets after China, so it would make sense for smaller but still large markets like Brazil, Chile, Argentina, etc.

It's about providing a service to the customer. Not about punishing them.

You give them a reason to buy on Steam. Gabe himself said you can't stop piracy, you need to find a way where they want to pay.

I'm really getting irate. Not only did we never get an official announcement (just a response on Twitter), we didn't get it until the 11th hour, when it was too late to preorder. Now I can't find a copy in any store and no one online seems to have any they can ship me. Amazon says I'll have to wait 10-11 days until they can ship one out. All of the stores near me or that I shop at have it as out of stock or on backorder. This is driving me crazy.

Same experience. Headed down to the local gamestop to get myself a refurbished 360 and a fresh copy of nba 2k13. Screw it.

Oh come the fuck on. I can't believe we're going to lose some of our best modders to this thing.

Yeah, I guess it seems like 2K's plan is to just get everyone to the consoles, and they're really effective. Small steps. No DLC, MyTEAM isn't in, DDs pushed back...

Really seems to be headed into a positive direction for us PC users.

Fingers crossed the year-long modding keeps my interest in the game high again. I even managed to enjoy 2K12 with all its issues because of the modding. But if our modders are giving up and going to consoles... I don't know.

Does anyone know where I can order the game to ship? Amazon says that the product ships between 11-12 days...Is there no where I can order it online to be delivered this week?

Also, this is just horrible mismanagement by 2K. This is why we need competition in sports games, and why I'm pulling for NBA Live to make a comeback (though I prefer 2K). This is the same lazy crap that EA sports pulls with Madden, and what led NBA Live down the drain. Just a shame...

Me buying a console just because of one game? Image

I didn't do it for an amazing title like Read Dead Redemption, I won't be doing it for this one (no offense, I'm sure it's a great game).

But yeah, shame on 2K.

No. We can't. Most of you guys are from USA and you can get the game from Gamestop. I heard you guys complaint about had to drive a couple of miles to get the game. We're not in the USA and we're not even in Europe where the game is released in two days. Damn, I'm not even in the capital city of my country. Here, there's not even one store that is selling games, original games.

You say Amazon. The game in Amazon cost 30$, then we have to pay the ship and import taxes. And we have to wait, not a couple a days. We have to wait a month if we are lucky enough.

Most of us went with piracy not because it was cheaper or free, but because it was the only way to get a game and don't have to wait months for a copy without any kind of support if the game wasn't working. Steam was the best thing that happens to everyone who love games and want to have something legal.

For you guys, maybe the delay in DD is have to stand up and search for a store. For us is wait, no matter what, until 2K decide to release the game.

I must be missing something here. What distinct advantage does DD have over retail, besides not having to play with the disc in game?

Judging by the posts from our various South American users, for some people it means getting the game at a reasonable price.

The DD game costs 30$ and we have it on the same day of release.

The Retail game (for us) costs about 60$ and we have it more than a month after the release date.

Make the maths.
