Video Card

Postby kdrose23 on Sun Jan 20, 2013 10:52 pm

PC SPECS:

- Intel Celeron D @2.66 ghz
- 1GB RAM
- AC'97 Audio Codec
- Nvidia GeForce FX 5500

I can play NBA 2K12 with lowest settings, also removed crowd.
Just want to know if upgrading my video card will certainly boost my gameplay and adjust my settings to a higher option.

I will upgrade my video card with the one's attached here.

It's not going to make much of a difference with that processor and 1 GB of RAM. You should be able to get away with running NBA 2K13 on low settings as well, but if you want better performance you're going to need a much better system overall.

If you want a new PC which can last for some years without upgrades here's the minimum requirements I believe it should have:
Windows 7/8
Quad-Core or Dual-Core Intel CPU @2.6GHz (if you prefer AMD processors add 0.2GHz)
4GB DDR3 RAM @1333MHz
500 GB HDD @5400rpm (I would prefer 2 HDDs. One packed with the OS and any programs you use and the other one for your music, pics, downloads etc. This way you don't need to backup anything for a format, except maybe some game saves or special files/programs)
A GDDR5 graphics card with GPU @ 800MHz and 1GB RAM @ 4000MHz.
Everything above those specifications is fine for some years to come.

On the other hand you can always use your old PC for older games and surfing and get a console for new titles. The main disadvantages of a console are the lack of mods, the inability to make hardware upgrades and that this generation of consoles will be surpassed by a new one next season. The advantages are you won't bother yourself with lags, graphics problems & settings and you'll pay much less.

If you choose to buy a console there's a couple thing to consider too. XBox 360 costs less, its games costs less, online gaming needs paid subscription and it doesn't play Blu-ray discs. PS3 costs more, its game costs more, online gaming is free and it supports Blu-ray. You should also keep in mind to check the console-exclusive titles.

I didn't specify a socket. Quad-Core means either i7 or Core2Quad or an equivalent AMD. The same applies for Dual-Core. I have a Pentium Dual-Core @2.2ghz, an i5 Dual-Core @2.5ghz and a 5 year old Core2Quad @2.4ghz and ALL of them (accompanied with hardware lesser than or equivalent with the specifications I mentioned) can handle NBA 2K.

Ye but he will waste money for old machine + how dafuq u have i5 dual core? i5 have 4 cores lol... And all new cpus are Gxxx i3xxxx and i5xxxx so theres no dual cores (intel). About AMD - i dont prefer AMD for gamin PC. Their only good thing is their inside video. But if u are gonna buy normal video u dont need them.

Why would you buy a 5400 rpm hard drive for a desktop?

I got an i5 mobile processor which differs from the desktop one. It has 2 cores instead of 4. Of course an i7 would be ideal for anyone but I tried to set some minimum requirements cause I don't know his budget. Now that I think of it maybe the graphics card could be more low-end when speaking about minimum specifications. If I told him what I recommend I would say an i7@3200MHz, 8gb ddr3 ram, 2tb of combined hd space, a 24 inches full hd 3d monitor and a 3d gddr5 2gb GPU @1200MHz... and that's a lot of money.

Why wouldn't he? I don't see your point. I haven't put much time into hard drives so you may wanna be more specific!

Because 7200 rpm is significantly faster, and SSD's even more so. Not to mention vastly more available. Especially if doing as you suggested, a SSD for OS and some programs, 7200 for everything else.

I set some minimum specs but I can't argue about the 7200rpm thing you said. But an SSD is a big financial NO in my opinion...

I mentioned my new laptop dual core just to say it supports 2k fairly well, even for a middle-end 2cored laptop processor! I can't understand what are we arguing over...
