Jersey Making from Scratch HELP

So I followed 
Jao's 
excellent tutorial and I now know how to use GIMP to change the colors and such and replace .iff files.
What I would like to know how to do from all those excellent jersey makers out there is how you make your customized jerseys. Namely how you place new logo's and team names on the uniforms. I have searched for videos or tutorials like mad trying to find one that teaches me to make a customized jersey from scratch and have yet to find one.
I am reaching out to the modding community, where can I find a tutorial to teach me the ropes.
Here is an example of one of my goals:
I want to make jerseys and a logo for the FIBA 2k12 mod for Canada. But since I don't know how to put custom graphics on a uniform, I can't get this done.
Please help!
