Playing Defense On Fast PGs

Postby jbarros on Fri Dec 09, 2011 2:01 pm

Hey guys I got a general defense question.

Generally I'm very good at playing defense. I can lock down most superstars no problem. Forcing turnovers, blocks, contested shots, etc etc.

However, I get destroyed every time I have to play against a PG like Westbrook, D. Will, CP3, D. Rose, and John Wall. These guys get to the paint like no tomorrow on me racking up RIDICULOUS amounts of fouls. I'm talking a differential in fouls of 20 or more. If it isn't an ez layup that is. Any other position I can lock down no problem but if it's a PG i'm getting hammered. I play with the Grizzlies btw. Any suggestions?

Try to double team whenever they penetrate or do some dribble moves, and dont be to close in guarding them... I dont have any problem in guarding any of them... and also i set my defensive double team setting to ON DRIVE on pg..

I tried double teams today for a change and I still had the same result. John Wall burned me today splitting all my double teams and racking up fouls. I've tried man-to-man as well as zone to no avail. This only happens to me against PGs. Every other position I can lock down consistently but PGs are just killing me as far as driving into the paint and racking up fouls and ez layups. I will try the "On the Drive" setting however. Maybe that will help out.

Some guys are impossibly hard to guard. However, if they blow by you, bring over a help defender and bump them. Helps more often than not. Just don't double team for too long, because he will find the open man. Always.

Switch to a center and clog the middle.

@Debiler: Will definetly try out a little more help defense. I'm fast at rotating so the open man isn't usually the problem. I just give up to many points in the paint/fouls.

@Darkh: Yep that usually works unless its Russel Westbrook -_- coming in and doing in between the leg dunks and slow motion windmill dunks in traffic >.>

Give them space and make them shoot. Guys like Westbrook, DRose, and John Wall aren't consistent enough shooters.

I don't think you even need to go as far as clogging. Usually if you're smart enough, you can position your big man so that he intimidates the ball handler, but still effectively covers the pass to his own man.
