Rookie heroics help Blazers upset Heat in Miami
In the duel of rookie point guards, Sit wins this round
Miami, FL - Dwyane Wade versus Brandon Roy was supposed to be the match-up of the game.
They were topped, by a rookie no less.
After struggling for much of the game, Blazers rookie Will Sit turned it on in the forth quarter, scoring 10 of his 14 points and dished out 4 assists in the final period to give his team a 99-84 victory over the Miami Heat, as well as gave him a personal victory over fellow rookie point guard Liam Washburn.
His fourth quarter heroics netted him the player of the game honors despite his 2-15 performance in the first half, Sit finished with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists.
On the other-hand, Miami's own rookie Liam Washburn didn't do too badly himself, as he shone for much of the game with his deadly shooting. Washburn had 17 points and 4 assists on a very efficient 7 for 13 from the field, including a perfect 2 for 2 from the great beyond. However, his 6 turnovers would prove to be costly for the Heat.
The duel between the superstars wasn't too shabby either, as Dwyane Wade still poured in 27 points despite a poor shooting night where he went 10 for 26 from the field, Wade also had 7 rebounds and 6 assists in the losing effort while the Blazers' Brandon Roy turned in 23 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists himself, but like Wade, had a poor night offensively, making just 8 of his 22 attempts and was 0 for 6 from three point territory.
LaMarcus Aldridge added 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Blazers while rookie Stanley Robinson had 12 points and 9 rebounds. Rudy Fernandez chipped in 13 off the bench as five Blazers scored in double figures.
The Miami Heat also had five in double figures as Michael Beasley and Josh Smith scored 12 apiece while Jermaine O'Neal had 11 points. Smith and O'Neal also swatted 4 and 3 shots respectively and O'Neal notched a double-double with 10 rebounds.
However, Smith only played 19 minutes due to foul trouble and fouled out with 3:41 left in the third quarter. Without the presence of the former defensive player of the year, the Blazers, specifically Will Sit, were able to attack inside and finish.
"I thought there were some unnecessary calls" said Smith "But it is what it is, so I'll leave it at that"
The Blazers now see their record rise past the .500 mark as they hit 15-14 while the Miami Heat drop to 15-11 for the season and remain as the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference
