Celtics edge Bulls in OT, takes 2-1 series lead
Boston, MA - It was in game two when the Big Three woke up from their slumber.
Game three was when they continued their surge.
Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett combined for 73 points as the Boston Celtics take a 111-109 win in overtime over the visiting Chicago Bulls to go up 2-1 in this Eastern Conference Second Round Series.
Pierce was named Player of the Game after scoring 33 points on 13 for 18 shooting. Kevin Garnett had 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Ray Allen added in 20 points and 6 assists of his own.
"We are the defending Eastern Conference Champions," said Pierce "Now we're back home, we ain't gonna go easy on them"
Fellow starters Kendrick Perkins and Rajon Rondo added 9 points, 7 rebounds, and 8 points, 9 assists, 5 rebounds respectively.
One other notable performance was from reserve Delonte West, who dropped in 10 points in 12 minutes from off the bench after getting involved in an altercation with Sacramento Kings forward LeBron James before the game. James was escorted off the building premise and subsequently released from custody afterward. It is rumored that the altercation was centered around West's alleged affair with James' mother, Gloria James. West, James as well as the Celtics organization refused to comment.
"I don't know anything about it, and I don't really care." said Doc Rivers "What I care about is how he did out there on the court. Today, he played well"
The Bulls put up a good fight, and were led by Derrick Rose, who finished with 26 points and 13 assists on 11 for 13 shooting. Forward Josh Smith also chipped in a great deal, narrowly missing out on a triple double by finishing with 15 points, a game high 17 rebounds, as well as a playoff career high 9 blocks.
Brad Miller played spectacularly off the bench, recording a double double of 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Kyle Korver dropped in 10 points of his own on 4 for 8 shooting. Joakim Noah had 9 points and 10 rebounds while sharpshooter Anthony Morrow shot a perfect 3 for 3 from the field for 7 points.
However, superstar Dwyane Wade struggled offensively from the Boston defensive pressures, and managed only 18 points on 9 for 29 shooting. Fellow starter Luol Deng, who is slowed by a strained MCL, also struggled with his game, ending with 10 points and 6 rebounds on 4 for 17 shooting. Deng had to be helped off the floor after his injury aggravated in the fourth quarter.
The Celtics came out early and played hard, holding a 11 point advantage going into halftime. However, Chicago fought back and went hard on the glass, their hustle got them close and eventually the game was tied by an alleyopp from Derrick Rose to Dwyane Wade with 23.2 remaining in the fourth quarter. The game was sent to overtime when Ray Allen's last second attempt came off the rim.
Both teams then went off running and scoring in overtime, and the score was kept close. It wasn't until when Boston's Kevin Garnett managed to bank in a one handed, adjusted shot in mid air with 0:47 remaining and gave the Celtics a 2 point lead, that both teams began to play hard on defense.
Unfortunately for the Bulls, even though they managed to stop the Celtics from scoring anymore points, they could not get a bucket themselves either and fell 1-2 in the series as time ran out.
"We've got to convert on our free throws" said Byron Scott "We had 10 misses from the free throw line that could've sealed this one easily."
The Bulls shot just 60% (15/25) from the free throw line while the Celtics converted on 78% (18/23)of theirs. So despite the 53-40 rebounding advantage, and specifically, the 13-2 advantage that Chicago held on the offensive glass. Boston was the team that had the last laugh.
A crucial game 4 will take place two days from now, right here in Boston.
Dwyane Wade slams down the alley-opp from Derrick Rose and sends the game to overtime
The Big Ticket banks it in after making mid-air adjustments to win the game.

Deng out for game 4, possibly for rest of postseason
May 9th, 2011
Bulls' forward Luol Deng will not be available for game 4 due to a strained MCL suffered
in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals series against the Boston Celtics.
The 6'9", 220 pound forward has been playing through the injury, but had to be helped
off the floor in the Bulls 109-111 overtime loss last night.
"We didn't think it was this bad at first" said Deng "I feel like I'm letting the team down,
going out at this crucial moment"
Deng could be out from 1 to 4 weeks, and it's very possible for him to miss the rest of
the playoffs, depending on how far Chicago can get.
Turner to Return for Chicago
May 9th, 2011
The Chicago Bulls has activated swingman Evan Turner for game 4.
Turner suffered a severely broken ankle back in February 3rd that was deemed then
to be season-ending. The rookie guard/forward began practicing in full a week ago
and due to the recent injury to starter Luol Deng, the Bulls management and coaching
staff has decided to place Turner back into the lineup.
"I feel ready" said Turner "My timing and rhythm is a bit off, but it's just basketball"
"I'm sure I'll get it back once i step on the court"
The rookie will not be starting in-place of Deng, but is set to be the first or second
option coming off the bench along with veteran Brad Miller.
Forward/Guard Kyle Korver will be starting at small forward for Chicago.
