How do you color jersey letters?

I just wanted to asked the jersey patchers out there, what method do you use in coloring your jersey letters? Im having some problems coloring them because I lose the quality when I color them. I just want to know what method do you use in selecting them to color them. Im using the magic wand in photoshop to select and color them.
