Court looks betters/accurate on low than high settings

Talk about NBA 2K10 here.

Court looks betters/accurate on low than high settings

Postby KyotoCarl on Sat Oct 31, 2009 3:04 am

I've noticed something strange with my game. The court looks betters and is more accurate when the stadium setting is low instead of high. The court reflects more and overall looks more shiny and accurate.
Also,´for the Bulls' court, I get two Bulls' logos by the side of the paint if I set the quality to low, but they're not there at the high setting. Also, the Lakers center-line is purple on the low setting and yellow on the high setting.

Has anyone else come across this or could someone also try it out and confirm this?

I have the European version of the game.

Opinions are my own.

I only thought that the difference was that the American version had updated courts, not that it was different depending on quality.
Is there a fix for this?

with regards to the reflections, i find high to be better and the reflections are more accurate (some softening on the reflection edges)

yes someone needs to address this..this seriously makes the game experience 10 times better to me with all the reflections on the court when playing on low

are you guys joking? I just compared the two and its obvious that HIGH is better

1. better shadows (See encircled areas)
2. HIGH has seats, low doesnt
3. the floor looks more real in HIGH as you can see that the reflections are affected by some sort of bump mapping/POM and you get the impression that the floor isnt that smooth..low looks like the floor is as smooth as a mirror.
4. HIGH has better details and better shading

check out the pics i posted of the miami court and youll see what we mean
First off the reflections on low look outstanding and make the game look like 2k10 and not 2k9  and one of my peeves Ive had about all Miami Heat courts is actually accurate on the low(the box is not yellow its kinds orange yellow)

the first is on hig and the 2nd is on low...
the first one almsot has no reflections..dont know why all courts arent affected like this
i understand the background graphics took a hit but im talkin about the court itself...the court itself is what i want to be able to use while using high stadium graphics

im not an expert in techincalities but it seems the HIGH as some sort of bumpmapping/POM hence the reflections get diffused while on low its all smooth hence more reflections..anyway even on TV there arent that much reflections anyway

to me, HIGH is more realistic, it has some sort of post processing effects whereas on LOW, the lighting and overall atmosphere lacks some rendering techniques

so lookin at those pictures i posted you would say that high looks better? dude come on..the geico isnt even reflected onto the court on high...the colors wrong and plus basketball courts reflect alot of lights..ive been to the games..the lakers court has a lot of reflections jsut like the low miami heat one..2k obviously just screwed up or something

look at the encircled areas..see that the court has texture and its not totally smooth hence the reflections are affected and are more diffused so you can see less..unless maybe the NBA floor is as smooth as a mirror then yes by all means the reflections on LOW is realistic

dude just go to youtube...courts reflect alot of light..yeah like a smooth mirror  ...and for the last time im talkin about the miami heat court..even the time lines are unaccurate on high..there black and there supposed to white like on low..the heat court has almost no reflections on high..if you dont understand what im trying to say or just dont have the common sense to use and eyes and tell the difference in quality is staggering the jokes on you bud...

actually the wood actually even looks better..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAXYSj-iVxw start watching that vid at bout the 1:55 mark..the reflections are so intense on u can actually see the reflection of the players in the court as wade runs down it...like in a smooth mirror lol...so if they wanted to be ultra realistic they would have player reflections too....

dude, you are just cherry picking the angles that have a lot of reflections, if you watch the youtube video you linked, it clearly shows that the game doesnt have that much reflections all the time..it depends on the angle..my point being on HIGH the reflections are just enough because the texture diffuses some of the reflections while on LOW it reflects like crazy as the floor is super smooth without any bump mapping..

basically both high and low have the same reflections but because of the extra effects on HIGH (texture on the floor as an example) some reflections get diffused..

lol watever floats ur boat dude if u dont like the immersion of feelin like ur actually there thats you....but when i play the game(on the miami heat court) when it looks like it does on low i actually feel like im there...ive played on basketball courts and they are very reflective..obviously this was the way 2k intended it to be cuz the court isnt even accurate on high...and the angle from the back i posted is the about the same angle as i play on the game so thats how the reflections should look dude..u either have no taste in graphics quality or no sense of realism. i could take a poll right now on which court people would prefer and 99 percent would say the ones with all the lights and reflections cuz it immerses u in the game..the court on high looks so dry and uninteresting...hardly any reflections and it makes me feel like im playing 2k9..and i already pointed out that the geico isn't even reflecting on high...yeah thats realistic...

if other people agreeing with you makes you feel better then make a poll then lol

but to me HIGH is more realistic because of the extra court textures/bumps that diffuses the light/refections and the extra atmospheric lighting..
grented some courts are smooth, but i havent seen a court that is super glossy as the ones when you set stadium to LOW and the diffused reflections in HIGH helps lessen the crazy reflections

if you could find a way to turn off the extra lighting when you set stadium to HIGH..and then use the court surface of the LOW settings then I guess that will give you what you want..

I don't know how to differentiate the two reflection settings but I'll try anyway:

The reflections on the court on high settings show that things reflect on the court per piece of the hard wood and not as a whole like that on the low settings.

Imo wicked waway is on spot with his conclusions.High it's HIGH.period.Extra techniques used in texturing and lighting.I also understand why MAGNUM and many other prefer the low setting as it is more clear in the eye without bump mapping, blur and texture diffuses. To each his own.I prefer high.

I agree High setting has a lot more detail where Low setting is just blurred and made glossy for lower end pc's. When I tried the lower setting it reminded me of NBA Jam courts on the Sega Genesis.

beauty is in the eye of the beholder....i agree with fear777 - "to each his own."

no need to argue over such things just to convince each other....

Guys, the point here about realism is not over lightning or shade, or reflections... its that HIGH quality courts has mismatches compared to low quality courts (which is more like the real courts when we talk about line colors, logo positions, texture color and others things that has nothing to do with quality itself) and real courts.

Wrong line colors (like on miami heat lane, where is a white line, it should be a black line, like on low quality court), missing of inside perimeter logos, like nola on Hornets, Bulls logos, Bobcats, spurs and so many others, Wrong center logo colors, like raptors which doesn't match with lane side color.

There is so many diferences from high to low courts (and when i say diferences im not talking about quality itself, but mismatches) that i decided to make a complete comparison between high and low courts of each team. And i will not talk about shade, lighting, better or worse details on it, but mismatches between them, like 76ers courts to have white lines on low quality (which is the right color) and red lines on high quality, and so on.

Im just waiting the release of the first patch to fix it. If not, i'll post the comparative, them maybe 2k can make a second patch to fix that, 'cause one thing is to make things with bad quality, but making it with so visible mismatches is a shame.

And what about the damn "unmoddable" shoes? What was wrong with the 2k9 shoes? Now chiao cant make that complete shoes patch like 2k9's. That pisses me off too... but this is subject for another thread.

Anyway, keep modding the game to perfection guys, like we did on 2k9. We will always find a way to make it better! (Y)
Cheers
