how to play defense in live 10??

Postby miklac90 on Thu Jul 15, 2010 1:12 pm

So I recently switched my difficulty setting to all star and I can't seem to stop the cpu from scoring
the cpu makes every contested 3s and when they don't i am charged with a foul
i read that switching players while on defense can make the defender lose their man
so i tried playing defense without switching players but the players on my team often lose track of their man regardless and never help out when opponent drive to lane
sometimes i feel that contesting shot increase the cpu's shooting percentage
i tried playing zone, double team, full court press but nothing really seems to help
only way i can win on this difficulty is by scoring more points and forget about playing defense
and the scores of 10 min game usually come out like 180 to 170 which is very unrealistic
another thing that bother me is the rebounding and steal in this game is decided by luck rather than skill
for example when i press y for rebound the players often jump to totally different direction from where the ball is falling and even when i am in good position for rebound the ball will magically go through the hand of my player to the cpu's point guard
I don't want to switch back to pro because its to easy for me but more and more i paly the all star difficulty it feels like
a arcade shoot out than sim basketball
any tips???

Do you use Defensive Assist? I'd definitely recommend using it to help stay with your man. It won't do all the work for you, so make sure you play defense with your feet and do your best to anticipate the ballhandler's moves and stay in front of him.

actually,
what i meant to say was the players that i am not controlling while on defense can't seem to stop cpu from scoring
a.i. does do a good job contesting shot's but it doesn't seem to lower the cpu's shooting percentage
they just drain jumpers as if they were wide open
i do use defensive assist to stay with the man im guarding but the other 4 players that i am not controlling just lets the cpu score on most possesion
and by miracle when they do block a shot they are called for a foul  (on 10 minute per quarter game the cpu shoots 50~60 free throws on average)
did the game developer program the game like this to creat more of a challenge for users or is their something wrong with my game setting?
also are their any patches on xbox live i can download to fix some of the bugs in this game??
(sorry for the bad grammar, english is not my first language)

Two official updates were released, but they actually caused a few issues of their own. If you're connected to Xbox Live, you would've downloaded them already. No further fixes for NBA Live 10 will be released.

Have you tweaked with the sliders? If all your sliders and CPU sliders are at 50, it makes it harder. What I do is control the on-ball defender at all times, that way I make sure the CPU never blows past me.

No I haven't tried tweaking the sliders yet, I will give it a shot
and the cpu's hot shooting has toned down after the new dna update so the game is working a bit better now
thanks for all the replies.

I have noticed that cpu controlled teammates are affected by cpu sliders, rather than user sliders. If you want your cpu teammates to help you out, you will need to increase the cpu help defense sliders. The downside is that your cpu opponent will also react better on help defense.

sometimes i feel that contesting shot increase the cpu's shooting percentage

The game relies heavily on dynamic DNA. You will need to scout your opponents scorers and keep them away from where they like to shoot. Also increase some user defensive sliders like "alter shot", etc.

another thing that bother me is the rebounding and steal in this game is decided by luck rather than skill
for example when i press y for rebound the players often jump to totally different direction from where the ball is falling and even when i am in good position for rebound the ball will magically go through the hand of my player to the cpu's point guard

Get in between your opponent and the basket when a shot is up, hold Y to box out and your player will automatically grab the rebound. If you aren't close enough to an opponent, your player will jump for the rebound instead of boxing out.

they just drain jumpers as if they were wide open

This is a major gripe of NBA Live 10. The shots are programmed by a virtual roll of the dice as to whether they go in or not. Obviously, higher rated players have a better chance, especially on higher difficulty levels, but so do players performing within the scope of their dynamic dna. Scout your opponents DNA and notice that the cpu will take shots based on players' strengths. Use that information to time your shot contest. If you don't get any better, lower the cpu shooting sliders.

well after the new dna update the cpu's shooting percentage has gone down slightly like I mentioned above
(50~40% to 40~30%)
but in air collision foul and shooting foul has gone up immensly in favor of the cpu :x
I just lost a game where cpu shot 98 free throws and I shot only 24 free throw (none of the foul were intentional)
I think I will just stick to playing online and forget about playing the offline mode :(
thanks for all the tips and replies

Well, at least the referee's foul calling is realistic.

Don't give up yet. You obviously need to turn down the foul sliders.

The CPU also sometimes seems to "cheat" on the dice roll as well. Just out of interest Pat, did the producers mention anything about that when they were talking to you guys about that stuff at the community event?

Not about "cheating", but they definitely stated that shots were predetermined, and that the user did not have as much control over shots than we may have thought. The outcome was more from ratings and dna, then from release point. That was the core of the problem, AFAIK.

Ah OK. I wouldn't be surprised if there was bias in the favour of the CPU or they somehow cheated on the dice roll. In my latest Dynasty game in 06 I had a great first half shooting the ball from downtown but in the second half my percentages dropped like a stone as open shots and even Shooter FSS attempts clanked off the rim, even with Korver whose rating is 89 (so he should knock them down at a fairly good clip). But then I was up big at the time so that could just be the comeback logic, which could be brutal in 06.
